Reed-Custer Class of 2022 honors Mrs. Bugg

The Reed-Custer High School Class of 2022 took time during this year’s graduation ceremony on May 22 to honor one of the district’s long time educators.

Graduates Shelby O’Reilly and Haley Buchanan came forward to honor Debbie Bugg, who has served as a PE and Health teacher for Reed-Custer since 1987.

Mrs. Bugg retired this year after more than three decades in the classroom. Mrs. Bugg’s daughter, Megan, passed away on March 9 following a seven year battle with Stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Domrzalski is in the ‘Spotlight’ for March

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of March is Chayton Domrzalski.

Chayton is the son of John and Angelique Domrzalski.

During his high school career, Chayton was involved in Fall Plays, Spring Musicals, National Honor Society, FCCLA, Scholastic Bowl, Speech, and Concert Choir. He was also a Student of the Month and was on the Honor Roll.

His future plans are to study pharmacy at UIC.

Kulach in the Spotlight for February

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of February is Natalie Kulach.

Natalie is the daughter of Michael and Ewelina Kulach.

During her high school career, Natalie was involved in Basketball, World Culture Club, Recycling Club, Science Club, Academic Challenge Team, the ICE Leadership Conference, and FCCLA. She was a Student of the Month, is in the National Honor Society, is on the Honor Roll, and is an Illinois State Scholar.

Her future plans are to attend Purdue University and major in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Lardi in the Reed-Custer Spotlight for January

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of January is Isabella Lardi.

Isabella is the daughter of Amanda Persic and Anthony Lardi.

During her high school career, Isabella was involved in Recycling Club, Science Club, Sign Language Club, Movie Club, Math Team, FCCLA, Theater Build Crew, National Honor Society and Student Council. She was also a Speech Team member and captain, the World Culture Club President, Science Department Student of the Month, the Spring Musical Stage Manager, a class officer, an IT Intern, and an Illinois State Scholar.

Comet Pride doesn’t stop at the door

This year’s Reed-Custer Comets football team did more than make school history.

The 10-2 club brought the entire community together, supporting the players, coaches, cheerleaders and members of the marching band as the students and staff pulled together to connect with more than just football.

Comet Fever is getting contagious

There’s Comet Fever going around and it’s contagious.

It’s the support that the town of Braidwood has for the Comet football program, who are in the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

All around the town there are signs that the town is believing and R-C Athletic Director Chuck Anderson notes there’s been a major uptick in attendance at the football games.

RCHS students plan for college and career paths

Students at Reed-Custer High School are digging deep to figure out their next steps after they leave high school.

On Sept. 15, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Danielle Valiente updated the board of education on the Naviance program—the new college and career platform at the high school.

The program provides students and staff with tools to help assess and develop essential competencies that will help those students be successful after high school.

Simonelli, Schott at the head of the class

The top two graduates of the Reed-Custer High School Class of 2021 left high school with some words of encouragement for their peers.

This year’s Valedictorian is Marie Simonelli, who graduated with a GPA of 4.4696.

Simonelli told her fellow Comets that rather than focus on the “unprecedented year” that they all experienced, she wanted to look to the future.

“What I do want to say is how proud I am to stand before you all and give this speech, because it is so amazing we are all here today in person and graduating,” she said.

RCHS Class of 2021: We stayed in the game

The sun has set on the Reed-Custer High School Class of 2021.

In a ceremony held on the football field at dusk on Sunday, May 23, the district welcomed the 111 graduates to the 93rd Annual Commencement Ceremony.

To accommodate COVID-19 protocols, the ceremony was held outdoors rather than inside the gymnasium, with up to four visitors in attendance per graduate.

“This is a little bit different than what we normally do, but we are so proud of this year’s graduating class and what they have endured over the last 14 months,” Principal Tim Ricketts said.

Prom night a success at RCHS

In a school year marked by masks, quarantines, and social distancing, the students at Reed-Custer High School were able to hold on to one piece of normal this spring.

In addition to the return of sports, concerts, and activities, RCHS students were also able to enjoy the return of prom.

The spring formal was held on April 24.

Unlike years past, where the students head off to prom on charter buses then later to a post-prom event, this year’s event was scaled back. Students attended prom, including dinner and music, at the high school.
