Students chill out for a good cause

Students at Reed-Custer High School spent some time getting firsthand experience on what it’s like to live without food or shelter.

Members of the RCHS chapter of the  Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) worked this fall collecting funds and food for the needy, then taking a night to live in someone else’s shoes.

Students attend leadership conference

Students from Reed-Custer High School got a chance this week to learn some important leadership skills from someone who has made a name for himself in the area of inspiring youth.

On Monday, Oct. 23, eight students represented RCHS at the I-8 Leadership Conference hosted by Seneca High School.

Kinzinger visits RCHS students

Students at Reed-Custer High School got a chance last week to ask questions about government and leadership to someone in the thick of beltway politics.

Illinois 16th District Congressman Adam Kinzinger made a visit to the school on Thursday, Oct. 19, getting a tour of the facility by Principal Tim Ricketts and visiting with several classrooms and members of the Student Council.

McGregor in the spotlight for October

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of October is Cory McGregor.

Cory is the son of Cecilia Pickard and Marty McGregor.

During his time at RCHS, Cory has been involved in football, basketball, track, NHS, SSA, math team, WYSE, has worked as a homework depot tutor, and was a Student of the Month.

Cory’s dedication to academics and his peers is something that his teachers acknowledge.

Mrs. Leveille noted Cory has been a part of the WYSE team for the last two years, and is one of the few to compete as a sophomore.

Going once, going twice, going four times

MATTEO LOMBARDI races for the end zone while being chased by Comets Friday night during one of his four touchdowns scored to help defeat Reed-Custer 54-21. The Wildcats never trailed as they racked up 515 yards of total offense while Reed-Custer gained a respectable 347 yards. But the difference came down to fumbles on a slippery field as the Comets turned the ball over five times to Wilmington. The victory impoves Wilmington to 6-1 while the Comets lose any chance to make the playoffs with a 2-5 record. Wilmington will host Sandwich Friday while Reed-Custer travels to Plano.

Strike up the band!

Members of the Reed-Custer High School and Middle School bands got another chance to show off their skills over the weekend, participating in the 69th Annual Grundy County Corn Festival on Sunday, Oct. 1.

This year’s Marching Comets play “Walking on Sunshine.”

The RCHS musicians have competed in Dwight Harvest Days, where they were Grand Champions, and the Corn Festival so far this year, and will take part this winter in the Custer Park tree lighting ceremony on Friday, Nov. 17, and the Braidwood holiday parade on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Wolf in the spotlight in September

Reed-Custer High School senior Emily Wolf finds herself in the spotlight this month.

Emily has been named the Senior Spotlight winner for September.

Emily is the daughter of Mark and Katie Wolf.

During her high school career, Emily has been involved in softball, volleyball, Math Team, Student Council, NHS, marching band, jazz band, pep band, choir, madrigals, WYSE, pit orchestra, Thespian Club, Homework Depot tutor, RC Chatter, Scholastic Bowl, Fall Play, Spring Musical, and SSA.

RC Industrial Tech program gets industry support

The new school year is just a few weeks in, but already the Industrial Technology department at Reed-Custer High School has gained a plethora of industry support, as students learn real life applications for their industrial tech education.

Since the start of the year, the department at RCHS has received support from six industrial technology businesses.

Franklin International has donated TiteBond 2 Adhesive to students in the industrial technology classes.

Homecoming 2017 will be out of this world

As the school year gets into full swing, Reed-Custer students are taking the time to welcome back those who once passed through the halls of RCHS.

This is Homecoming week. And the theme for Homecoming 2017 – Comet Space Jam.

While this year’s homecoming comes earlier than usual, the students managed to keep up with the planning process, setting up a memorable week for students and alumni.
