Lepper in the Reed-Custer Senior Spotlight for December

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of December is Ben Lepper. Ben is the son of David and Jennifer Lepper.

During his high school career, Ben was involved in Golf, Baseball, POPS (Peers Offering Positive Solutions), and Safe School Ambassadors. He was also ICE Conference All-Academic in Baseball, a Student of the Month, an ACE winner, a member of the ICE Leadership Conference, and was on the Honor Roll.

His future plans are to attend Joliet Junior College and then transfer to a university to become an Accountant.

Reed-Custer says farewell to the Class of 2023

The Reed-Custer class of 2023 had an extremely notable year, and with the students having graduated Sunday, they are sure to go on to do incredible things in life. The year was nothing short of impressive.

The academic excellence of the Reed-Custer graduates is clear. To be recognized as a board scholar, a student must have over a 4.0 grade point average, and 22 students were awarded this title. Principal Tim Ricketts said that is the largest number of board scholars in the 14 years of being the principal.

After more than three decades with the Reed-Custer School District, high school principal Tim Ricketts gave his final farewell on Sunday during the 95th Annual Reed-Custer High School Commencement. The 115 graduates of the Class of 2023 walked through the halls for the last time as students on Sunday, May 21.

Ricketts said as he leaves the world of education after 33 years—the past 29 with Reed-Custer—the word to describe his journey is “gratitude,” a quality of being thankful and a readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Esparza in the Reed-Custer Senior Spotlight for April

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of April is Connor Esparza.

Connor is the son of Matthew and Amanda Esparza. During his high school career, Connor was involved in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He named to both the All-Conference and Academic All-Conference teams in Baseball. He was also on the High Honor Roll and was a volunteer coach for RCMS Baseball.

His future plans are to attend JJC and work towards an Associate’s Degree in Engineering.

And this historic year for the Comets was made even better thanks to the new field at Comet Stadium.

On Oct. 19, Superintendent Mark Mitchell have an update of the district’s facility improvements to the members of the board of education.

Wiyninger in the Reed-Custer Senior Spotlight for September

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of September is Tyler Wiyninger.

Tyler is the son of Dawn Kochan.

During his high school career, Tyler was involved in Concert Band, Pep Band, Marching Band, Solo and Ensemble, Fall Play, Musical Pit, Speech, Soccer, Track and Field, Math Team, Scholastic Bowl, Student Council, National Honor Society, Academic Challenge Team, and Comet Community Leaders (CCL). He was also a Student of the Month, a participant in the ICE Leadership Conference and was on the Honor Roll.

Reed-Custer to phase out class ranking system

Reed-Custer High School will see some changes for how high school graduates are academically ranked during their high school career.

But, after taking some input from students and parents earlier this summer, the district will make some tweaks to how they will adjust the process for those students.

Each year at graduation, the high school honors the Top 10 graduates, each student receiving special recognition for their hard work and grade point average, culminating with speeches by the valedictorian and salutatorian.

RCHS graduates overcome adversity

The 100-member Reed-Custer High School Class of 2022 has walked its last time through the halls of the high school as students.

The 94th Annual Commencement Ceremony took place on Sunday, May 22, back inside the high school gymnasium this year after two years outdoors due to the pandemic.

Principal Tim Ricketts delivered his last remarks to the graduates, sharing with them the pride he has felt watching the students deal with an abundance of adversity that was thrust upon them during the pandemic.

The top two graduates of the Reed-Custer High School Class of 2022 had an important message for their peers as they exit high school and enter the world as adults: The possibilities are endless.

Valedictorian Natalie Kulach told her fellow graduates that their bond as a small class has been a blessing for the students.
