Cannon’s ‘pitch’ to Comets: Find your passion

Long before writing for an award-winning television show, penning a “perfect” script, and making her directorial debut, screenwriter, producer and actor Kay Cannon roamed the halls of Reed-Custer High School.

Cannon, a Custer Park native and 1992 Comet alum, paid a visit to her alma mater last week, stopping in to visit with students to talk about Hollywood, working hard, and finding her inspiration for the box office success Pitch Perfect.

Cannon is one of seven children raised in Custer Park, where her parents still live.

Cromp in the spotlight for October

The Senior Spotlight winner for the month of October is Casey Cromp. Casey is the son of Dan and Regena Cromp.

During his time at Reed-Custer High School, Casey has been involved in concert band, jazz band, honors combo, pep band, marching band, Madrigal instrument ensemble, musical pit orchestra, speech team, Scholastic Bowl, math team, NHS, student council, WYSE team, RC Chatter, solo and ensemble, and Cabaret/Broadway Revue.

He was also a Class Officer, a Student of the Month, and the Drum Major.

RC Top Two deliver a message to peers

RCHS graduates Emily Wolf and Cory McGregor were seated at the head of the class in 2018.

Cory took home the honor of this year’s Salutatorian, while Emily is the Class of 2018 Valedictorian.

During graduation, the pair spoke to their fellow graduates about the years they’ve spent together, and what comes next.

Cory said their time together in a smaller district in a small town has left a positive, lifelong impression on him.

RCHS grads face a future of choices, opportunities

Comet seniors took their last stroll through the halls of Reed-Custer High School on Sunday, May 20, as the 125 graduates of the Class of 2018 received their high school diplomas.

With all the usual pomp and circumstance, and cooler than usual temperatures making for a comfortable afternoon inside the RCHS gymnasium, the graduates were honored for their four years of academic success.

Superintendent Mark Mitchell told the graduates it had been an honor to watch them grow from feisty fifth graders to young men and women.

Students learn hard truths of drinking, drugs

Students at Reed-Custer High School got a chance to hear about the consequences of making bad choices from two people who see just what happens to those teens who get busted.

On May 14, Judge Ben Braun and Judge Victoria McKay Kennison, who both sit on the bench in Will County, gave a special presentation to freshmen, sophomore, and junior Comets on seven reasons why to leave a party.

The presentation kicked off National Prevention Week at RCHS.

Dillon in the spotlight for April

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of April is Jackson Dillon.

Jackson is the son of Robert and Shaleen Dillon.

During his high school career, Jackson has been involved in Madrigals, Concert Choir, Concert Band ,Marching Band, Pep Band, Fall Plays, Spring Musicals, Yearbook, Golf, Bowling, Speech, and National Honor Society. Jackson was also President of the Thespian Club, a Homework Depot tutor, an ACE winner, and a Student of the Month.

Jackson’s teachers said he’s a hard working student with a bright future ahead of him.

Hamilton in the Spotlight for March

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of March is Haley Hamilton. Haley is the daughter of Joe and Lisa Hamilton.

During her high school career, Haley has been involved in FCCLA, HOSA, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, SSA, NHS, and NTHS.

She was also an ACE winner, a Writing Center tutor, and a class officer.

Haley’s teachers said she’s a hard worker who always brings a positive attitude to class.

Mrs. Rankin says that Haley has a positive attitude in class and always gives her best effort, even when it’s difficult.

Making the school a greener place to be

Helping the school to become a ‘greener’ place to b - this is the mission statement for the Reed-Custer High School Recycling Club.

The Recycling Club was formed in 2011 with the help of a small group of dedicated students. Club members volunteer their time emptying the recycling bins in the hallways and sorting out the aluminum cans.

The club has been involved in reducing the use polystyrene products in the cafeteria since the #6 PS plastic can't be recycled and is found to be harmful to the environment.

Eight members of the Reed-Custer High School Class of 2018 have received a prestigious award for academic excellence, honored as 2018-19 Illinois State Scholars.

The statewide list of top scholars is released annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), the state agency committed to helping make college accessible and affordable for Illinois families.

This year’s RCHS Illinois State Scholars are Madelyn Alton, Breanna Fielder, Haley Mazon, Cory McGregor, Madison Murphy, Jacob Stockin, Emily Wolf, and Ilias Yeck.

Frieders in the spotlight for December

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of December is Brodie Frieders.

Brodie is the son of Jeff and Connie Frieders.

During his high school career, Brodie has been part of Math Team, Scholastic Bowl, WYSE, choir, football, and track. He was also a Student of the Month and an ACE winner.

Brodie’s teachers said he’s a natural leader.
