Reed-Custer graduate creating some buzz at Blackburn College

Campus life is abuzz for Dade Bradley of Braidwood who attends Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill.

That’s because Bradley, a sophomore majoring in biology, is active in expanding a bee program on the southwestern Illinois campus.

Blackburn College's bee program is often referred to as the "greatest thing on campus no one knows about." This summer, the College has its sights set on expansion, with the number of active hives the program maintains increasing to 20 and caring for a little under a million pollinators.

RCHS teen brings lessons of communication to peers

One of the key components when it comes to keeping teens happy, healthy and safe is to keep the lines of communication open. But, focusing on communication is not just for the adults.

RCHS sophomore Tori Loomis is a member of the group Reed-Custer Against Drugs, also known as RAD. The student members of RAD work closely with the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC), bringing the voices of local teens into the prevention organization.

Emily Anderson Earns DAR Good Citizen Award

Emily Anderson was honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award for Reed-Custer High School. Emily is the daughter of Glenn and Mary Anderson of Essex.

The DAR Good Citizen Award honors an outstanding senior who exhibits the qualities of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism. The selection was voted on by the faculty and staff.

“The Music Man”

     What’s old is new again, and in the world of theatre, it’s called a revival.
    This weekend, students at Reed-Custer High School are not only reviving a classic piece of musical theatre, but a part of the school’s theatre history.
    As the theatre department approaches its 25th year of producing musicals, an all-student cast will bring back “The Music Man,” the first musical to be staged in the school’s auditorium.

RC students’ community service will increase

Students at Reed-Custer High School will soon give back to their communities even more, as part of their civics education.

The district administration said they’ll increase the number of community service hours each student must complete at RCHS, part of the district’s high school graduation requirement.

Director of Teaching and Learning Danielle Valiente said that the current community service requirement is 20 hours throughout their four years of high school.

Leopold in the Spotlight for January

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of January is Luke Leopold.

Luke is the son of Robert and Erin Boseo.

During his high school career, Luke has been involved in Basketball, RC Chatter, and National Honor Society. He was also a mentor for an RCMS student, a Student of the Month, and was the videographer for football, basketball, and volleyball games.

Luke’s teachers said he’s a hard worker who sets a good example for his peers.

Mrs. Dennis called Luke a model student.

Students recognized for academic excellence

Nine Reed-Custer High School students have joined the ranks of thousands of students statewide recognized for outstanding academic achievement.

The Comet seniors were named last month as Illinois State Scholars.

On the list at RCHS were Michael Babjak, Alexa Cieslak, Jackson Crater, Casey Cromp, Maggie Meyr, Steven Patterson, Klayton Schott, Thomas Sforza, and Marissa Williams.

A lawsuit has been filed against the Reed-Custer School District, stemming from allegations of hazing and abuse during the pre-season of Comet football in 2017.

Reed-Custer honors military veterans

The nation honored former members of the United States military last week, marking the annual Veterans Day holiday on Sunday, Nov. 11 and Monday, Nov. 12. But students at Reed-Custer High School marked the occasion by simply taking a day off.

Sixteen Comet juniors and seniors spent this year’s holiday visiting with veterans at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno.

RC responds to hazing reports

The Reed-Custer School District has issued a response to allegations of alleged hazing among its football team players and staff. But the issue remains

This week, a Chicago-based media outlet released a story regarding alleged hazing at Reed-Custer High School last year, accusing former students of abuse and the district’s administration of failing to protect the alleged victim.

Last week, Superintendent Mark Mitchell released a statement to parents in advance of that story.
