Lady Coalers move up in conference ranks with shutout

    The Coal City varsity softball team celebrated  a big win Friday, after defeating Reed-Custer 1-0.
    The victory is a confidence boost for a team that improves to 7-3 in the conference (8-10 overall) and tied at the top with Seneca.
    “We had some tough losses to Dwight and Seneca this past week, and we sat down as a team and talked about what we wanted to do this season,” said Lady Coaler coach Stephanie Harmon. “We want to finish the season strong.”

    Just one run would have made a difference Friday for he Reed-Custer varsity softball team. But they didn’t get it and ended up dropping a 1-0 decision to Coal City.
    The Lady Comets managed just one hit, as Kenna Wilkey recorded a double in the fourth inning. Antoinette Hill also received a walk, putting runners on first and second in one inning.
    That would be the only time Reed-Custer truly threatened, as they faced only one out. Unfortunately, a couple of shallow hits right to defenders caused no runs to score.

    The Wilmington varsity softball team just couldn’t hang on for a win on Saturday, as they fell to Chicago Christian, 6-3.
    The Lady Wildcats recorded all three of their runs in the first inning, as they jumped to an early 3-1 lead.
    Bella Egizio got things started, drawing a walk, which was followed by a single from Kiley Sowa.
    Jenny Kucharski got the team on the board with a two-run double, scoring Egizio and Sowa, and that was followed by an RBI double from Katie Kucharski.

Lady Coalers earn two conference wins over Peotone, Lisle

    The Coal City varsity softball team left too many runners stranded on base Monday against Seneca  and ended up losing 8-2.
    The Lady Coalers left six runners idle despite recording eight hits, as they were unable to push the much needed runs across.
    Abbie Cullick and Elaina Bach both scored one run, as Madison Emerson and Sam Olsen both had the RBIs.
    Emerson and Cali Caruso led the offense, going 2-for-3 on the day. Emerson’s two hits were both doubles.

Blue Devils too hot for Wilmington

    The Wilmington varsity softball team couldn’t keep pace with a red hot Peotone offense Monday, in a game that lasted only five innings.
    The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 10-run lead and never looked back.
    Wilmington (4-11 overall, 1-7 conference) put one run on the board in the top of the first, and attempted to close the gap in the fifth to avoid the shortened game. Unfortunately, they were only able to add three runs, as they still trailed, 14-4, ending the game.

Lady Comets surprised by the Lady Bulldogs

    The Lady Comets wound up going 2-2 over the past week in conference action, as they split games against their opponents.
    On Monday, they suffered their second loss in the I-8 falling to Streator, 4-2.
    Reed-Custer (11-7 overall, 6-2 conference) just couldn’t close the gap on Monday, as the Bulldogs claimed a 4-1 lead by the end of the five innings.
    Kenna Wilkey led Reed-Custer going 2-for-3 with a home run, to earn one RBI and two runs scored.
    Haley Mazon added a hit, and Haley Hamilton drove in Wilkey for an RBI.

Lady Coalers pick up three wins in I-8 conference

    The Coal City varsity softball team returned to a winning record in the I-8 on Monday, as they picked up a 2-1 win over Lisle.
    The Lady Coalers (4-7 overall, 3-2 conference) trailed 1-0 after Lisle recorded a home run in the second inning. However, that would be the Lion’s only run of the game, as Coal City gained the lead.
    Blaire Harseim tied the game back up at one run a piece, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Makenna Crater after tagging up.

Win keeps Lady Comets out in front of the I-8

    The Reed-Custer varsity softball team kept their conference success rolling on Monday, as they picked up another win in the I-8 over Wilmington, 5-2.
    The Lady Comets (9-5 overall, 4-0 conference) didn’t score until the third inning, but when they did, they made Wilmington feel it.
    “We have six seniors with a lot of knowledge of how I like to play the game,” said Comet coach Ramsey Harkness. “It is all coming together, how we take bases, try to take advantage of other’s mistakes. We kind of make things happen, and it helps us out on the base paths.”

Lady Wildcats tap R-C’s Wilkey too late

    The Wilmington varsity softball team’s conference woes continued Monday, as they suffered a loss unbeaten (in conference) Reed-Custer, 5-2.
    The Lady Wildcats (4-7 overall, 1-4 conference) just couldn’t get things going, as they faced a 5-0 deficit heading into the sixth inning.

Wilkey pitches to near perfection

    Reed-Custer’s varsity softball team managed just four hits in their game against Pontiac on Saturday, but that was all they needed behind powerhouse pitching from Kenna Wilkey.
    The Lady Comets (6-3 overall) defeated the opposition 3-0, as Wilkey was one walk away from a perfect game for the second game in a row.
    She allowed no hits or runs through her seven innings of work, while walking one and striking out 16.
    Offensively, while the Lady Comets managed just four hits, they were able to take advantage of some walks and solid base running.
