Lady Comets are regional champs

    The Reed-Custer varsity softball team was all work and no play Friday when they clinched their second straight Regional Championship in Braidwood.
    “The pride I have for my players, doing the certain little things that we work on through the season, they are engaged in exactly what we’re trying to do,” said Lady Comet coach Ramsey Harkness.
    “We played everybody all season, so everyone has kind of been in particular situations. A lot of times I remind them, you have been here before.”

Lady Coalers advance in Morris Regional

    The Coal City varsity softball team entered their first round of Regional on Monday with one thing on their mind, keep the season alive.
    The Lady Coalers (14-15 overall) did just that, as they picked up a win over No. 10 seed Plano in the opening round, 5-2.
    Leslie Youskevtch put on a show from the circle, picking up the win through seven innings, as she let up just two earned runs.
    Youskevtch allowed six hits and four walks, but struck out 12 batters faced to garner the victory.

Lady Comets gain some steam heading into Regional

    Reed-Custer put a hurting on Fieldcrest during the Lady Comets’ opening game of Regional on Tuesday.
    Reed-Custer earned a shutout victory led by Kenna Wilkey, who pitched a one-hitter, earning 17 strikeouts through the seven innings.
    The Lady Comets compiled fiveruns, as they skated to the easy win (5-0), and now await the winner between Momence (4th seed) and Peotone (5).
    Those two teams play Wednesday night at 4:30 p.m. at Reed-Custer.
    The Lady Comets will play in the Regional Championship on Saturday in Braidwood at 11 a.m.

Lady Coalers clinch I-8 North Division, regional up next

    The Coal City varsity softball team suffered a loss Monday during a high scoring affair with Beecher.
    The Lady Coalers (13-14 overall) took too long to get started while Beecher built a nine-run lead through four innings.
    Leah Campos finally got Coal City on the board in the fourth, hitting a two-run homer, plating herself and Blaire Harseim to cut into the lead, 9-2.

Lady Wildcats fall to Fieldcrest in Regional opener

    The Wilmington varsity softball team saw their season come to an end on Monday, as they made the long road trip to Minonk to take on Fieldcrest.
    The Lady Wildcats, who entered as the seventh seed, wound up losing to Fieldcrest (6) by a score of 3-1.
    Wilmington scattered four hits in the game, but just couldn’t push their runs across, as they were unable to answer Fieldcrest’s early offense.
    The opposition put one run on the board in the second, and two more in the third, with Wilmington responding with one run in the sixth.

It takes a community to play ball

    Before the first pitch could be thrown, it took months of preparation by 14 board members and dozens of coaches in the Wilmington Baseball Softball Association.
    It’s an effort that’s turned an annual rite of spring into a community tradition whereby parents and volunteers unite so kids can play ball.
    Look at the parents coaching today and you’ll see that most were at one time players in the WBSA. They are volunteering just like their parents did when they were young.

Wildcats vs the Comets

    There’s no shortage of talent in the Interstate Eight Conference has baseball and softball teams gear up for regional action.
    No matter how the teams do during the regular season, the I-8 conference seems to always push their teams farther into the postseason, and this year could prove to be no different.
    To start out, let’s talk about the 2A baseball Regional, which will be hosted at Herscher.

    The Coal City varsity softball team picked up a shutout win on Monday, as they defeated Plano 10-0 in six innings.
    The win keeps the Lady Coalers tied at the top of the I-8 Conference North Division. They remain even with Seneca, as both teams hold conference records of 10-4.
    Leslie Youskevtch, along with her defense behind her, earned the win. Youskevtch pitched all six innings without letting up a run, allowing just three hits, three walks, and striking out nine.

Lady Wildcats beat the Panthers, lose to three others

    Wilmington’s varsity softball team was silenced by an I-8 powerhouse Monday night.
    The Lady Wildcats secured only two hits off Herscher’s tough pitcher during a 9-0 loss.
    Lorri Kucharski recorded both hits for the team, including a double. Wilmington just couldn’t get past a Herscher defense that let up only one error.
    For the Lady Wildcats, they recorded four errors, with Katie Kucharski suffering the loss on the mound.
    Katie lasted all six innings, letting up nine runs (three earned) off 10 hits, walking one and striking out three.

Lady Comets have tough time with Manteno, Herscher

    Reed-Custer’s varsity softball team didn’t start this week off right, dropping a conference contest to Manteno, 11-0 on Monday.
    The Lady Comets scraped together just three hits over five innings when the game was called due to the mercy rule.
    Haley Mazon went 2-for-2 with a double, while Mackenzie Collier added the other hit.
    The opposition wound up with nine hits in the game, erupting with eight runs in the third inning to really put the game out of reach. Errors plagued the Lady Comets, as they finished with five.
