Coal City Police are investigating a burglary at a cellular phone store early this morning (Sunday, July 16).
The Verizon Wireless, 435 W. Division St., was burglarized around 5:30 a.m. Police were dispatched to the store when the alarm activated. It is the second break-in at the store in just over a month.
Sgt. Tom Logan, the department’s public information officer, reported officers arrived to find the glass on the front door shattered and pry marks on the rear access door. A pry bar was found on the sidewalk outside the business.  He said the only item that appears to be missing is an iPhone display box.
Officers located a blue Dodge Avenger parked in the eastbound lane of Division Street (Route 113) with its hazard lights on. The locked vehicle had mechanical and body damage. It was towed from the area and is being held as a possible connection to the burglary.
A Grundy County Sheriff’s Department K-9 officer and Coal City Fire Protection District personnel were called to search for a person possibly on foot, however no one was located so the suspect remains at-large.
Logan said video surveillance taken from the scene is being reviewed, as well as evidence recovered.
The department will be added in its investigation by the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force . Anyone with information that could assist police with the investigation is asked to call 815-634-8533.
