Pup patrol made easier with donation

The Coal City Police Department will be able to identify lost pets, potentially reuniting them with their owners quicker, thanks to a recent donation by a group of car enthusiasts.
Subies of the Corn NFP, a registered nonprofit, donated microchip readers to both the Coal City and Wilmington Police Departments. These contributions were made in honor of Subaru Loves Pets®, a nationwide initiative dedicated to improving the lives of animals.

Coal City Officer commended for saving a life

Just before 10 p.m. on Nov. 6, Coal City Police patrol officer Casey Roth came to the aide of a man who had overdosed and his actions saved a life.

Roth was dispatched to a residence in the village. Upon his arrival he was directed to the basement where an unconscious man—pale with blue colored lips—was on the floor.

Roth detected a pulse and performed a sternum rub to no response. The officer administered four milligrams of Narcan nasal spray into the male’s nostril and continued to do the sternum rub.

Two face federal charges in local cell phone store robbery

Two men are in federal custody for their role in the armed robberies of cellular phone stores including one in Coal City.

A superseding indictment was handed down Nov. 9 against two Chicago area men and a handful of others who face a series of charges related to the robberies that occurred in 2019 and 2020. The indictments were issued by the U.S. District Court Western Division in Rockford.

Fallen police, firefighters to be honored

The Coal City Police Department, in partnership with the Grundy County Law Enforcement Managers Association (GCLEMA), will host the county’s annual police and fire memorial service on Thursday, May 16.
The ceremony is being held in conjunction with National Police Week, May 12-18. The observance offers the public an opportunity to reflect on the individuals within their communities who gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the lives of others.

A slight increase in crime

A look at the Coal City Police Department’s crime statistics for 2018 shows a slight increase in crime. But department leaders say it’s nothing to be alarmed about.
Last year, the police department witnessed an increase of about 8 percent in overall call volume. End of year statistics indicate officers handled over 7,900 calls with about 2,400 of those being dispatched, meaning a large percentage of the calls were officer initiated.

Coal City seeks ways to combat drug use

   One drug overdose is bad, four even worse, but the worst is when people die and that’s what happened here at the end of 2018. In under 48 hours two people, a 26-year-old male and a 60-year-old female, succumbed to lethal doses of heroin.
    The news prompted questions to which Coal City’s police chief outlined the  prevalence of drug use in the community with the Village Board. What he told them is, “we are not immune.”

Coal City Police welcome new officer

     On a day designated to honor the service and sacrifice of the nation’s law enforcement community, the Coal City Police Department  came out to support one of its own.
    The department’s sergeants and patrol officers filled the village hall’s board room Jan. 9 to watch as the town’s newest patrol officer, Nicholas Mazzone, was sworn into duty. Jan. 9 was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
    “How appropriate it is to be swearing in a new officer on this day. Congratulations and welcome to the department,” Mayor Terry Halliday said.

Harseim to serve as GCLEMA president

Members of the  Grundy County Law Enforcement Managers Association (GCLEMA) recently met for an end of year meeting and holiday dinner. During the proceedings, Channahon Police Chief Shane Casey was recognized for his year of service as GCLEMA president. Coal City Police Sgt. Chris Harseim presented Casey with a plaque noting his service to the group. Harseim will serve as president of the organization for 2019.

New cop for a new year

   As her children looked on, Kady Sassenger was sworn into her new position with the Coal City Police Department and presented her silver star.
    Sassenger, 33, of Channahon, will assume her position as the department’s newest patrol officer after completing a required police training. She is slated to attend the Illinois State Police Academy in Springfield early next year.

Search resumes for patrol officer

    Just when the Coal City Police Department thought it was back to full force, its newest officer tendered his resignation and departed the village without notice.
    Kevin McGrath was sworn in on May 9 and within a week he had turned in his badge, uniform and department issued equipment.
    McGrath came to Coal City with eight years of police experience from his time as a patrol officer in Streator and was selected as a lateral transfer by the Coal City Fire and Police Board.
