Coaler grapplers crown one at the PIT

The Coal City wrestling team (28-5) kept up their winning ways during the annual Princeton Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
As a team, they placed fifth overall with 152 points. Dakota was the top team with 212 while Reed-Custer (87) was tied for 11th and Wilmington dropped to 29th with 28 points.

Turning the negative into a positive

Timberlie Jahn was born to a mother addicted to drugs and alcohol, a woman who later made the decision to give up custody of her young daughter.
So at the age of 5, Jahn was adopted by a couple who couldn’t have children of their own, new parents who she said had no training on caring for a child with a traumatic start to life.
It was her childhood experiences that led her on a path to not only break the cycle of trauma in her own life, but to help others in similar situations.

Lisle is in the lead, Comets on their heels

Midway through the girls basketball season, Lisle has the best record in the conference while Reed-Custer is third followed by Wilmington and Coal City.
The Lady Lions lead the Illinois Central Eight conference with a (16-3, 6-0) record. They have scored 335 points while allowing 196 points to opponents.
Peotone is second in the conference with a 13-4 record overall, 4-1 in league play. The Blue Devils have put up 289 points and have allowed 202.

Lady Coalers use strong first half to beat the Lady Panthers

The Coal City girls basketball team bounced back after three straight losses in the Lisle Holiday Tournament, picking up a 45-24 win over Manteno on Monday.
The Lady Coalers (5-11, 2-4) allowed just five points throughout the entire first half while going on a 27-5 run to seize control early in the game.
Manteno matched their output in the third to make it a 36-14 game but the Coalers held their ground in the final frame to seal the win as the Panthers scored 10 points but it was nowhere near good enough to rally.

Coalers top conference-leading Lions, battle the Wildcats next

The Coal City boys basketball team got off to a solid start against Lisle in a back and forth 69-58 win over the Lions in the last game of the Plano Holiday Tournament on Monday.
Coal City seized control to begin the game, going on a 17-11 run. They added 13 more to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room.
Lisle stayed right with the Coalers though as they matched their scoring output in the third as both scored 19 to keep the deficit right where it was, 49-42 after three.

Warriors crown five at Warrior Invitational

The CCMS wrestling team won the 16-team Warrior Invite on Saturday with 251 team points. Shorewood Troy was second with 204 points while New Lenox Liberty earned third.
The Warriors had 17 individual placers, including five champions, one second place winner, four earning third place, two fourth place winners and five fifth place winners.
Owen Petersen (65), Culan Lindemuth (70), Brant Widlowski (90), Landin Benson (112) and Nathan Grant (126) were champions, making it all the way through at their respective weight classes.

ICE midseason leading matmen

Midway through the 2019-2020 wrestling season the question remains if there is a Illinois Central Eight team capable of upending Coal City?
The answer is probably not.
Coal City leads the ICE with a dual team record of 26-5 with no losses in the conference. Reed-Custer is near the top with a 17-5 record while Wilmington is 9-14.

Coal City matmen meet match in Tolono Unity

The wrestling Coalers went 7-2 during the Abe’s Rumble on Friday and Saturday to earn fourth in the Rumble.
They blew out St. Joe Ogden, Anna-Jonesboro, St. Bede, Canton, Pontiac and Mt. Carmel.
The Coalers (24-4) cruised to a win over PORTA to get themselves set up with a semifinal matchup with Tolono Unity but they were unable to come up victorious, losing by two major decisions to Unity.

Lady Coalers come out shooting against Westmont

The Coal City girls basketball team bounced back from two straight losses with a 42-20 win over Westmont on Saturday.
The Lady Coalers (4-10, 1-4) got started early and often, scoring 17 first half points t take a 17-8 halftime lead.
They continued that trend as they outscored their opponents, 25-12 in the second half to seal the victory.

Bulldog fourth quarter run stuns Coalers

The Coal City boys basketball team was out-hustled by the Streator Bulldogs, who had a huge fourth quarter to win 49-36 in the Plano Christmas Tourney.
Streator pulled ahead 25-19 at the half. Both teams matched each other’s output of eight points in the third to keep the gap right where it was.
But the Coalers were unable to stop the charging Bulldogs who finished with a 16-9 run.
Payton Hutchings led Coal City with nine points and five boards.
