Wilmington, Forest Preserve work toward kayak launch on North Island

A plan to revitalize part of the North Island Park and provide recreational opportunities by adding a kayak/canoe launch is officially underway.

On April 25, the members of the City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

The agreement is the first step to secure funds to improve the North Island by adding a kayak/canoe launch and upgrade the parking lot near the small dam where the Mill Race flows back into the Kankakee River.

I-55 closure expected as bridge installed over Black Road

A pedestrian bridge scheduled to be installed over Interstate 55 will be one of the final pieces of a plan by the Forest Preserve District to link two trails.

The installation along the south side of Black Road is scheduled for 1 a.m. Wednesday, September 22. Traffic will have to be stopped on the interstate for 15 minutes as the two bridge sections, which total 300 feet, are set in place. Weather and other factors could affect this timeline.
