A judge in downstate Sangamon County has issued a ruling in favor of parents in a lawsuit filed last fall to end the state’s mask mandate.

Sangamon County Circuit County Judge Raylene De Witte Grischow issued the ruling late Friday afternoon, granting a temporary restraining order to stop districts from enacting the governor’s school mask mandate.

The lawsuit was filed in October by downstate attorney Thomas DeVore on behalf of parents in more than 145 school districts across the state, including Wilmington and Elwood.

Pritzker’s thoughts on whether to lift mask mandate

Gov. JB Pritzker told reporters not long ago that he was worried about the plateauing COVID-19 hospitalization rate and said he wouldn't yet lift his statewide mask mandate.
But the governor told me something around the same time during an interview that he hasn't yet said publicly: He's most concerned about what may happen in January and February and upbeat about the spring and summer.

Parents in Wilmington, Elwood join lawsuit over school mask mandate

Local school districts Wilmington 209-U and Elwood 203 are among 145 school districts named in a lawsuit filed last week to try to overturn the school mask mandate put in place this year by Gov. JB Pritzker.

The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 20 in Macoupin County by attorney Thomas Devore on behalf of dozens of parents across the state.

After spirited debate, masks remain the mandate at Reed-Custer

When the Reed-Custer School District Board of Education convened for is regular monthly meeting on Aug. 18, more than a dozen members of the community were on hand to ask the district to reconsider the mask mandate for all district buildings.

But the board members stood their ground, first making sure the mostly unmasked visitors put on face coverings, then letting them know the district’s hands are tied.

All schools in the state of Illinois are under a mask mandate following an executive order issued by Gov. JB Pritzker in early August.
