Brookfield Zoo passes available at Wilmington Library

The Wilmington Public Library District is offering zoo passes to members of the community.

Library Director Maria Meachum announced recently that the district has received 4,000 Brookfield Zoo passes to hand out to the public.

“This is an extraordinary gift we have received in the past which allows us to offer up to six passes to any adult Wilmington Public Library cardholder in good standing,” Meachum said.

Each pass is good for either one adult or one child to enter the zoo for free. Parking and special exhibits are not included.

There’s no end yet in sight for the novel coronavirus.

But after months of altered operations, the Wilmington Public Library has finally been able to reopen for its regular hours.

The library officially went back to regular hours on Monday, Oct. 5. That said, there are still mitigation efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 mandated at the library, including capacity limits, a mask requirement, social distancing, and Plexiglas between patrons and employees.

Cases of the novel coronavirus remain low in the city of Wilmington, even as the state of Illinois has seen an uptick in recent weeks.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic in the 60481 zip code — which includes the corporate limit of Wilmington as well as outlying areas — stands at 61.

Inside the city limits, total confirmed cases remain under 15, with several of those already “purged” as recovered.

Summer reading returns to Wilmington Public Library

It looks a little different from years past, but the Summer Reading Program is back in action at the Wilmington Public Library.

Summer Reading kicked off last week and runs through Aug. 7.

This year’s theme is Dig Deeper: Investigate, Read, and Discover! The library is getting into the spirit with dinosaur bones welcoming visitors at the front door.

Wilmington Library preps for new smartlockers

The Wilmington Public Library is set to reopen June 29 following more than three months of being shuttered to patrons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The library plans to return to regular hours, but will allow no more than 26 patrons at any given time, and masks will be required. Patrons unfortunately will not be able to lounge, but instead will just be allowed to come in to check out their materials or use computers for a limited amount of time. A senior hour will take place from 9-10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
