When Wilmington takes the field Friday for the IHSA Class 2A State Championship, they'll face one of the most tradition-rich small-school football programs in Illinois: The Maroa-Forsyth Trojans, a perennial contender with a history of deep postseason runs. The 1 p.m. title game sets up a compelling showdown—Wilmington's power-run, ball-control offense against a Maroa-Forsyth program that has made the state finals 12 times in school history, winning two state titles and finishing runners-up seven times under head coach Josh Jostes.

The Wilmington Wildcats will hit the road Saturday to face a familiar foe — the undefeated Seneca Fighting Irish (10-0) — in the second round of the Class 2A football playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Seneca.
Seneca, led by head coach Terry Maxwell, captured the Chicagoland Prairie Conference title this fall behind a dominant ground game and stingy defense. Through 10 games, the Fighting Irish have outscored opponents 439–165, averaging more than 43 points per game while allowing just over 16.

After gritty loss Wildcats know they have something special

The last time Wilmington dropped its first game of the season, the Wildcats responded with one of the most memorable runs in program history. In 2023, a season-opening loss to Seneca was followed by 13 straight victories and a Class 2A state championship.
From that night forward, Wilmington rattled off 25 consecutive wins and advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals before finally falling last November.

Possessions figure to be at a premium when fifth-seeded Wilmington (12-1) faces fourth-seeded Athens (11-2) in the Class 2A championship game Friday at 1 p.m. at Hancock Stadium in Normal. Both teams pride themselves on running the ball. "It's the state championship game. They are a very well-coached team and run a double-wing offense somewhat like ours but a little different," said head coach Jeff Reents. "All of their backs run very hard.

Coalers upset Lisle, Wildcats get their win, Comets done in by Indians

The Coal City varsity football team never trailed Friday night when Lisle, who had yet to lose a game, came to town. The Coalers built a 24-14 lead by half-time before holding the Lions scoreless the final two quarters to improve to 8-1 overall and raise their seed in next week's playoffs.

Coal City quarterback Payton Hutchings  found Austin Pullara from 12 yards out with 5:03 left in the first quarter to go up 6-0. Coaler running back Daniel Jezik plunged into the end zone from one yard out to make it 12-0 Coalers 5:45 2q.
