Wilmington 209-U firms up end of year plans

The COVID-19 pandemic made its mark on the academic calendar all across the globe.

But in Wilmington school district 209-U, in-person classes have been in session all year, with good results.

“We started the year with about 82% of the students as in-person, and right now we’re just over 90% of our students who are back in person,” Assistant Superintendent Kevin Feeney told members of the board of education earlier this month. “So, that’s good to see. We’re hoping that next year, that number is 100%.”

Students prepare for standardized testing in 209-U

Despite a year altered by the coronavirus pandemic, students across the country will still take their standardized tests this school year.

On March 8, Wilmington School District 209-U Assistant Superintendent Kevin Feeney gave an update of testing plans to the members of the Board of Education.

“The Biden administration has indicated that all states will test, there will be standardized testing throughout the month of April for students in grades three through eight, and for our high school students on April 13,” Feeney said.

Write-in candidates added to ballot in Wilmington

The field of candidates for Wilmington City Council has grown.

Three residents of the city have filed paperwork to officially become write-in candidates for seats up for grabs in the April 6, 2021 consolidated election.

In order to be considered on the ballot, write-in candidates had to file their notarized declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate by Feb. 4.

On the ballot in April is one alderman seat from each of the city’s four wards, one unexpired term in the Fourth Ward, the office of city clerk, and the mayor’s seat.

Wilmington 209-U administrators happy with academic progress

As the Wilmington School District 209-U continues to host in-person learning, administrators in the district said the school year is going as well as can be expected in light of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.

On Feb. 8, building administrators gave members of the board of education an update of the progress at each of the district’s schools since students returned after winter break. The district started off the second half of the year with several days of remote learning before bringing students back.

WHS seniors can apply for over $100,000 in local scholarships

Wilmington High School seniors have six days left to write their essays and get their applications in to get local help paying for college.

Every year local businesses and organizations in Wilmington pitch in to make it easier for WHS seniors to pay for college.

Last year 55 scholarships were available for seniors to apply for. This year there are 50 scholarships, many for $1,000 or more, that will be available.

Last year over $100,000 scholarship funds were given. This year’s total will be announced after the awards night.

Wilmington 209-U approves tax levy

Wilmington School District 209-U has approved its property tax levy increase for the upcoming year.

The district held a public hearing regarding the levy on Dec. 14, before voting to approve the levy at the regular monthly meeting of the board of education.

The corporate and special purpose property taxes extended or abated for 2019 were $8,178,256.29. The proposed corporate and special purpose property taxes to be levied for 2020 are $10,223,166.00. This represents a 25% increase over the previous year.

Wilmington High School students volunteer in feeding starving children

The Wilmington High School National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society members recently spent the morning packing food at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora.

Students from the two organizations earned volunteer hours while help children from around the world.

Feed My Starving Children partners with donors who fund nutritious MannaPack meals, has volunteer groups like NHS and Tri-M come in daily to pack them and then ships them to countries with starving children.

COVID-19 sidelines third grade class in Wilmington

Students in one third grade classroom inside Wilmington School District 209-U are remote learning this week and next week, after a classroom case of the novel coronavirus forced the district to enact a quarantine among students.

Superintendent Dr. Matt Swick notified parents and families that two students had tested positive for COVID-19 in Mrs. Noffsinger’s third grade class at Stevens Intermediate School.

After completing contact tracing, Swick said that more than half the students in that classroom were deemed to be close contacts of those two students.

Local schools report high graduation rates

The Illinois State Board of Education released the 2020 Illinois Report Card, providing snapshots and academic information for public school districts across the state.

The COVID-19 pandemic made much of the student data from the 2019-20 school year either unavailable or unable to support year-to-year comparisons.

Some of the data may have been affected by the suspension of in-person instruction in March 2020, effectively ending all face-to-face learning across the state and making each district end the year in some form of virtual or distance learning.

COVID cases alter school schedule at Wilmington 209-U

Two new cases of COVID-19 among staff members in the Wilmington 209-U School District forced administrators to make adjustments to its in-person learning plan for this week.

On Oct. 22, Superintendent Dr. Matt Swick sent an email to parents in the district, informing them that one of the teachers at Wilmington High School had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
