The Wilmington Police Department is looking to add a new vehicle for a detective by first getting rid of some older vehicles that have reached their usefulness limit.

“We talked before about our declining fleet,” Chief Phil Arnold told members of the Police and ESDA Committee on July 14. “Our proposal is to surplus two of our old squad cars that we have, a 2013 and a 2014 that have significant miles on them, and the Harley Davidson [motorcycle] because we don’t have an officer to drive the Harley Davidson anymore.”

Kankakee River Drive in Wilmington to get speed reduction

A short stretch of roadway in Wilmington is getting a speed limit reduction in an attempt to slow down drivers who neighbors say have been putting the pedal to the metal too often.

Police Chief Phil Arnold told members of the Police and ESDA Committee on July 14 that the department had received multiple complaints about speeding vehicles along Kankakee River Drive, west of the railroad tracks.

Officers spent several weeks conducting a study, running stationary radar several times a week. The patrols showed several speeding vehicles, but not major violations.

Tip leads to capture of heartbreak kid in Wilmington

A local juvenile who allegedly tagged several downtown buildings with spray paint will complete community service through the Wilmington Police Department.

The incidents happened on June 13, when several security cameras caught footage of a young male tagging six businesses downtown with graffiti between the hours of 3-4 a.m..

After the incident, the police put out a call to the public to help track down the vandal, and the City Council approved a $500 reward for anyone who could help catch the graffiti artist.

Wilmington Police Chief to public: Social media warnings of violence are false

The Wilmington Police Department is working to quell the rumor mill when it comes to the potential for riots or looting in the area.

Wilmington Police Chief Phil Arnold told members of the City Council on June 2 that he receives daily intelligence from the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois State Police, and even the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Arnold warned the public that a trend on social media that cautions people that vans or busloads of rioters would be hitting certain towns with ill intentions have all been false.
