Chavez to depart from Wilmington Park District

The Wilmington Park District will begin their search for a new executive director.

Renee Chavez, who currently fills the seat, has resigned from the district after 10 years.

During her time with the district, officials credited Chavez with helping to lead the successful development of a comprehensive system of parks, recreational facilities, and a diversified portfolio of recreation programs for the district.

Wilmington Park District thanks volunteers for their efforts

A standing ovation met one of the strongest volunteer groups in Wilmington Thursday, Oct. 22 at the Park District Board of Commissioners’ meeting.

The Community Foundation for Wilmington Parks, Recreation, and Improvement was recognized for their outstanding service to the betterment of the Wilmington community.

In early Spring of 2020, the Community Foundation and Wilmington Park District teamed up to recover some gently used playground equipment from Alsip Park District.

New equipment installed at Children's Memorial Park

Members of the Community Foundation for Wilmington Parks, Recreation and Improvement were up early on Saturday, Oct. 10, to install some “new to us” equipment at Children’s Memorial Park in Northcrest.

The playground equipment was donated to the Wilmington Park District by the Alsip Park District back in April.

The Community Foundation partnered with the park district, Kuypers Brothers Concrete, Builders Concrete and Ramcorp to dismantle and bring the equipment to the city.

The volunteers placed one of two playsets in the park over the weekend.

Wilmington Park District works through finances amid pandemic

The fitness facility on Water Street in Wilmington is open to those looking to work out, and kids are hanging around each day for before and after school activities.

But, things aren’t quite back to normal for the Wilmington Park District.

Executive Director Renee Chavez gave an update on finances to commissioners during the district’s regular monthly meeting on Sept. 24.

Wilmington Park District will seek COVID relief funds from Will County allocation

The Wilmington Park District could collect up to $25,000 in COVID-19 relief funding.

But, what the district is eligible for and what they will receive is not necessarily the same thing.

On Aug. 27, park district director Renee Chavez gave the members of the board an update on funding being distributed to Will County taxing districts by the county.

Wilmington Park District fundraiser postponed until spring

After Wilmington Park District acquired Children’s Memorial Park in Northcrest earlier this summer, the district began working on plans to help outfit that park, and a second yet-to-be determined recreation area, with all the bells and whistles needed to make it a great place for the public to visit.

But, as the effects of the pandemic continue to be felt, the first fundraiser aimed at building those coffers has been scrapped, at least for now.

The district has been working on plans for a Hillbilly Golf Outing fundraiser to take place in September on the North Island park.

Wilmington Park District readies for before, after school programs

The novel coronavirus has created issues for parents as they try to juggle back to school schedules for themselves and their children.

But like years past, the Wilmington Park District is ready to lend a helping hand, with before and after school programs.

Andrew Liaromatis, Superintendent of Recreation, said the district is planning its before and after school programs with diligence as they maneuver new guidelines and safety protocols mandated by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Gov. JB Pritzker.

Wilmington Island Park District gets a new name

Do you know the name of Wilmington’s park district?

It’s a question that can befuddle those who live in town, but district board members hope a change made in late June will alleviate that confusion.

On June 25, the board voted 3-1, with one member absent, on a resolution to officially change the name of the district from the Island Park District to Wilmington Park District. The resolution means the district will pursue that name change after current grant cycles are complete.

Wilmington Park District sets policy for credit card usage

The Wilmington Island Park District approved a policy for credit card use by employees during its regular meeting on June 25.

Executive director Renee Chavez said the new credit card account, issued by BMO Harris, is a corporate card for purchasing. Chavez said the district previously did not qualify for a corporate card because there was not enough of a revenue source available, so she and other staff were using a Sam’s Club card under Chavez’s name.

Now those purchases will be placed on the corporate card.

Wilmington park transfer one vote, signatures away from done

An agreement outlining details of the city of Wilmington’s transfer of ownership of the Children’s Memorial Park in Northcrest to the Island Park District was approved by the Park Board on May 28. After the City Council accepts it, the parties can put their signatures on the closing documents and complete the transaction.

The public will see minor changes in the layout of the park as soon as the Park District takes over and mobilizes a volunteer workforce; the Community Foundation for Wilmington Parks, Recreation and Improvement.
