Wilmington Island Park District gets a new name

Do you know the name of Wilmington’s park district?

It’s a question that can befuddle those who live in town, but district board members hope a change made in late June will alleviate that confusion.

On June 25, the board voted 3-1, with one member absent, on a resolution to officially change the name of the district from the Island Park District to Wilmington Park District. The resolution means the district will pursue that name change after current grant cycles are complete.

The state of Illinois entered Phase 4 of Gov. JB Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan last week, as communities work to recover from closures due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

As part of those reopening plans, the Wilmington Island Park District has welcomed members back to their gymnasium facility, with changes in place to keep the exercising community protected.

Park District to seek grant to buy new park land in Wilmington

The Park Board last week agreed to pursue a grant to acquire land bordering Forked Creek for a new park site, where an inclusive playground could be located.

The playground project, in partnership with the Wilmington Rotary Club, has been in the works almost four years, according to Island Park District director Renee Chavez. The civic club initially wanted to acquire open space for the community, but as members did their research, she said, the focus turned to developing an accessible and all-inclusive facility that children of all abilities could enjoy.

What's in a name? A lot if it's your "brand."

The Board of Commissioners has been asked to consider changing the name of the Wilmington Island Park District. Park Director Renee Chavez asked the board to consider the change at the board’s Thursday, April 23 meeting, which was held via video conference.

She said this was ‘kind of” brought up during strategic plan discussions – the district’s legal name versus what residents call it. She estimated that of the people participating in the meeting, only about half would be able to come up with the district's full proper name.

Russi questions opponents’ statements

    Mike Russi is questioning claims made by his opponents for Park District commissioner that the fitness center is self sufficient, and that a lot of the $500,000 paid by the RidgePort Logistics Center development is in the bank as they maintain.
    Russi, incumbent Commissioner Dave Melhorn, former commissioner Randy Hill and Kevin Ptacek are all running for two open seats on the Wilmington Island Park District Board of Commissioners.
