Will County Board goes virtual

JOLIET —The Will County Board has moved its meetings to a videoconference platform. The move is intended to maintain proper social distancing and shelter-in-place compliance with directives and recommendations from Gov. JB Pritzker and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Diamond extends enterprise zone to include $1 billion facility

     The village of Diamond will extend the boundary of its enterprise zone to encompass a $1 billion electric generating facility.
    Competitive Power Ventures is set to construct a 1.250 megawatt natural gas fueled generating facility along Collins Road in Goose Lake Township and has asked Diamond to include the site within its zone. In doing so, the company would be eligible for certain economic development incentives offered by the state of Illinois.

RCHS teacher charged with sexual contact with a minor

The Reed-Custer School District has accepted the resignation of a consumer sciences educator, who has now been arrested on charges of inapporpriate sexual contact with a minor resulting in a $1 million bond.

Dayna Chidester, 50, who has been with the consumer sciences program at RCHS since August 2017, was arrested this week and charged for alleged sexual contact with a minor in Manhattan, where she resides.

Prior to this week's development, Chidester was under investigaiton for alleged contact with a student at Reed-Custer on accusations of drug-related activity.

Tollway model an option for crumbling I-80

Anyone who travels north knows that a trip along I-80 can be slow, bumpy, and downright dangerous.

Now, the Illinois Tollway System is throwing its hat in the ring, suggesting turning the troubled roadway into a toll road to help pay for needed repairs and upkeep.

Earlier this month, Robert Schillerstrom, Chairman of the Illinois Tollway, gave a presentation in Joliet on the possibility of turning I-80 into a toll road, as a way to pay for desperately needed upgrades and infrastructure improvements throughout the region.

River alliance seeks Will County support

Turning on the faucet, most folks take for granted that the water coming from the tap is safe.

But, what it takes to provide safe, abundant and affordable water is seldom something people consider, including where that water comes from, what it takes to bring it to homes and businesses, and what funds are available to develop new water sources, treatment options, and storage and delivery systems.

Will County earns cash for drug prevention

The Will County Sheriff’s Office has an additional resource for its drug prevention efforts.

On Oct. 11, sheriff’s office social worker Bonnie McPhillips made a presentation in front of the Will County Board Executive Committee, announcing that the department-supported coalition, the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, is the recipient of a $125,000 federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Grant.

Kinzinger, local leaders talk drug prevention

Local leaders have opened the lines of communication for fighting the nation’s opioid crisis.

U.S. Congressman Adam Kinzinger, R-16, hosted a roundtable discussion last week, joining with city and county officials at Braidwood City Hall to brainstorm ideas for fighting the use and abuse of illegal drugs.

"Last year was the first year in history that overdoses exceeded gun deaths in this country,” Kinzinger said during the hour-long discussion held on Aug. 2.

Board says yes to tax ballot issue

The Reed-Custer Board of Education has said yes to putting a new tax on the ballot for taxpayers to decide.

But the decision to put it to a public vote was a thin margin, after one board member objected to the overall issue.

At issue is the proposed Will County Schools Facilities Sales Tax.

School board: Let the voters decide on tax

The Reed-Custer School District may soon join other districts in the county in asking voters to make a decision on a new funding tax.

In June, members of the Board of Education held a brief discussion on the proposed Will County Schools Facilities Sales Tax.

All counties in the state except Cook County can impose a tax, from which the revenue generated can be exclusively used for “school facility purposes” as defined in the statute.

Students learn hard truths of drinking, drugs

Students at Reed-Custer High School got a chance to hear about the consequences of making bad choices from two people who see just what happens to those teens who get busted.

On May 14, Judge Ben Braun and Judge Victoria McKay Kennison, who both sit on the bench in Will County, gave a special presentation to freshmen, sophomore, and junior Comets on seven reasons why to leave a party.

The presentation kicked off National Prevention Week at RCHS.
