Staying calm, Braidwood 8-year-old saves his mother’s life

In most ways, Braxton Grayling is just your typical 8-year-old, spending the days hanging out with his friends at school, enjoying his favorite toys and activities, and concentrating on his favorite sport, motorcycle racing.

But on Dec. 30, 2021, Braxton was anything but a typical third grader. It was that day that the youngster’s actions weren’t just extraordinary, but also saved his mother’s life.

It was around 11 a.m. that Thursday during Christmas vacation when Braxton’s mom, Beth Grayling, suffered from a seizure and was unresponsive in their Braidwood home.

Braidwood Police Department readies for dispatch switch

The Braidwood Police Department is preparing to switch dispatching services.

Last month, Braidwood Police Chief Todd Lyons said the city is inching closer to the date that the department will switch from Laraway Communications Center (LCC) to Western Will County Communication Center (WESCOM) for dispatch.

“Monday, Aug. 2 is our projected switchover date to go to WESCOM dispatch,” Lyons reported to the members of the Braidwood City Council on May 25.

City to pay its share of WESCOM debt

Braidwood’s police department no longer uses the Western Will County Communication Center (WESCOM) as its dispatching service for emergency calls. But the city still must pay up on an agreement held with the old dispatch service from when it joined in 2007.

On Aug. 14, the City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with WESCOM to pay a total of $201,318 in money due. That cash will be paid in monthly installments of $1,157, with the obligation set to expire on May 1, 2032.
