    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys soccer team remains in search of a win as they wound up with three losses during their competition in the annual Somonauk Tournament.
    The Comets (0-5 overall) recorded just one goal through the three games, as Christian Williams scored on a penalty kick in the opening round against Aurora Central.
    Reed-Custer fell to the Aurora team, 6-1, and wound up losing the following two games against Somonauk (6-0) and Plano (9-0).
    Nathan Minuth accumulated 19 saves through the tournament.

Coalers return veteran line-up for new soccer season

    The Coal City varsity boys soccer team returns a strong cast of players for the 2017 campaign.
    The team finished last fall with an overall record of 7-11, losing in the first round of the Regional to Manteno.
    For second year coach Steven McCleary and assistant Todd Painter, this season has a lot of promise based on the roster.
    “We are looking to take the next step in our conference and compete with many teams this year,” said McCleary. “We are also looking to get double digit wins and be above .500 for the first time in a while.”

WHS soccer program takes a blow

    Wilmington’s high school soccer program has been sideswiped just as the season has started.
    Monday’s game against Beecher was canceled for other reasons, but moving forward, the Wildcats will only be playing junior varsity games against opposing teams. They have also cut out of the schedule, Momence and the Rivals Cup for this year.
    The problem? Not enough kids on the roster.

    Reed-Custer’s soccer program is hoping for a breakout season as they field a team with much more experience.
    The Comets finished their 2016 run with only two wins out of the 20 games, going winless through the conference.
    Last year’s varsity team included 11 sophomores,  and those players are back as juniors, a year smarter and  eager to hit the field.

Wildcat soccer faces a rebuilding year

    There are a lot of gaps to fill for Wilmington’s varsity boys soccer program.
    “We lost a lot of very talented players last year, and the program is turning over to a new set of players,” admits coach David Blackburn. “Our numbers are very low this year, so it will be important to continue to get fundamentally strong both mentally and physically.”
    Blackburn, entering his fourth year, will be assisted by Travis Ivanoff. However, this season may be his toughest yet, as he looks to fill a roster short of players and experience.

Reed-Custer alumni kick it back for the soccer program

    Reed-Custer held its fourth annual alumni soccer game Thursday, and while they didn’t have the numbers as past years, they still enjoyed the day.
    The Comets had about 18 players in attendance for the game, all current and past players for the boys soccer team.
    That’s down from last year’s event which had 24 players compete, including a few female players. It  didn’t help that it was blistering hot out on the field.

Getting their kicks during Coaler summer camp

    Coal City High School’s soccer field was dotted with its future this past week, as players showed up for the annual youth summer camp.
    The camp came to a close on Friday, as the youngsters battled the heat from 10 a.m. to noon, competing in a 3-on-3 tournament.
    “It is wonderful,” said Mike Kostbade, Lady Coaler soccer coach. “The kids all really love the sport, and they are all anxious to prove themselves. A lot of these kids have played on teams with one another, and it is easy to get them to play together.

Smith signs with Judson University

    Reed-Custer varsity soccer player Koby Smith has committed to Judson University.
    Smith, son of Rick and Tammy Smith, will attend Judson in the fall planning to major in architecture.
    “Koby was a leader for sure,” said Reed-Custer coach Andy Gleixner. “I talked a lot about him on senior night and at our banquet. When you have a player who can be a coach on the field, that is how Koby is.

Lady Coalers close regular season, prepare for Reed-Custer Regional

    The Coal City varsity girls soccer team built some steam heading into Regional action this week, as they earned a win over Reed-Custer, and secured a tie against Ottawa.
    Against Ottawa, the match was scoreless through the first half, but it only took 30 seconds for the Lady Coalers to score in the second half.
    Sophomore forward Lauren Phillips scored off an assist from senior midfielder Ashley Matusiak.
    Ottawa wound up tying the game up midway through the second half, and was able to keep Coal City off the scoreboard.

Lady Coalers win big over Kankakee, Wilmington

    The Coal City varsity girls soccer team was in the driver’s seat Monday night, as they came away with a big win over Kankakee, 4-2.
    While the game served as non-conference, the Lady Coalers still added one to the win column, improving to 3-4 overall (1-2 conference).
    All of Coal City’s four goals were scored in the first half.
    Sophomore forward Helen Onsen and junior midfielder Bridget Kauzlaric both recorded two goals, as Syndi Bortles picked up one assist.
