Coal City lost a longtime community leader with the death of Richard Roseland.
The town’s mayor for eight years during much of the 1980s, Roseland passed away April 4 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He was 68.
In addition to serving as the town’s mayor from 1983 to 1991, Roseland oversaw the village’s finances as a commissioner and remained involved in various community initiatives. His interest in serving his community also found him taking a run for the office of Grundy County Sheriff in 1982.
