Reed-Custer fishing buddies Bret Cavanaugh and Alex Bielfeldt were taking things in stride Sunday despite being days away from competing on a national scale.
The two Casting Comets have qualified for the Bassmaster High School National Championship on Chickamauga Lake in Tennessee making them the first RCHS athletes to make it to a national event.

Braidwood backs Headrick during Majors debut

Former Reed-Custer pitcher Brent Headrick made his Major League debut a week ago at Fenway Park in Boston, recording a Save for the Minnesota Twins.

Headrick, the Twins' No. 25 prospect per MLB Pipeline, allowed one run on one hit as he threw three innings to close out the Twins’ 10-4 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday. He became one of only three pitchers in Twins history to earn a save in his MLB debut.

Headrick, a 2019 draftee, was called up three days earlier putting family and friends into action.

Reed-Custer superintendent lauded by State Police as holiday Good Samaritan

The Holiday Season is a time for family, friends, and helping those in need, especially those who, perhaps, have been forgotten.

With that spirit in mind, the members of the Illinois State Police (ISP) issued a public thank you to Reed-Custer Superintendent Mark Mitchell, who the law enforcement agency called “a concerned and compassionate citizen” after Mitchell stopped to assist a distressed driver this month.

Last week, Mitchell was driving from Morris to Seneca with his wife Julee when the couple saw a truck that occasionally wandered out of its lane.

Surpises were few during first week of playoffs

And then there were 16. That’s how many teams are left in each of the eight classes of the IHSA football playoffs as winning teams move on to the second round.
Wilmington (2A), Reed-Custer (3A) and Coal City (4A) all advance to the second round after winning on Saturday. The Wildcats (9-1) will host Tri-Valley Downs (8-2) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Reed-Custer (10-0) will play saturday at 5 p.m. against visiting Pecatonica - Du-Pec Coop (8-2) while the Coalers (7-3) have a four-hour drive to Carterville (10-0) near Marion, IL for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday.

'Dancing through the Decades' the theme as Reed-Custer says Welcome Home

School has only been back in session for a few weeks. But, the time has already come to welcome back Reed-Custer alums, with Homecoming Week kicking off on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Homecoming 2022 takes the theme of “Dancing through the Decades.” The theme week includes activities, sports, spirit days, and culminates with the annual Homecoming Dance on Sept. 17.

RCHS students said Homecoming is more than just your typical fall rite of passage. As things slowly get back to normal after the pandemic, celebrating a full homecoming week has taken on new meaning.

RC scholarships need some help

Due to COVID, the annual RC Cooks Scholar Dollars Fundraiser to benefit senior scholarships was canceled this year.

R-C Superintendent Mark Mitchell asked board of education members if they would like to help contribute additional funds to help offset the program.

“In the past, we have given money from the board and have budgeted that for senior scholarships every year,” Mitchell noted.

Last year, $10,000 was give toward to event, resulting in twenty $500 scholarships to help graduating seniors during their first year of college or tech school.

Reed-Custer RAD members celebrate Red Ribbon Week

The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced everyone to make some drastic changes to their day to day lives in 2020.

But, the pandemic has also affected all sorts of events and activities, ones that often require a lot of hard work to pull off.

One such activity affected was this year’s Red Ribbon Week, which encourages children to grow up drug free. The annual national event takes place every year from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31.

Students recognized for achievement in trap shooting

Three Reed-Custer students were recognized at the Aug. 21 School Board meeting for their outstanding achievement in the Illinois State High School Clay Target League state tournament.
Superintendent Mark Mitchell awarded the athletes with certificates in front of the Board of Education.
The members of the trap shooting club participated at the league state championships in Bunker Hill on June 1, where they all earned rankings of fifth place or higher in their divisions.

Enrollment slightly down in Reed-Custer schools

Enrollment numbers have decreased from last year in the Reed-Custer School District.
The district reported 1,357 students enrolled in its three schools as of Aug. 23, which is down by 52 students from the 1,409 students enrolled on the same day in 2018.
At Reed-Custer High School, the number of students enrolled decreased by only three, with 473 students enrolled in 2018 compared to 470 students this year.

School budget anticipates nearly $1 million surplus

The Reed-Custer School Board is preparing to put the stamp of approval on another year of spending in the district, and the tentative budget shows a nearly $1 million surplus.
On Aug. 21 , Superintendent Mark Mitchell presented the Board of Education with the tentative budget for the 2020 fiscal year (FY20), which began on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2020.
The budget includes total spending for FY20 at $25.7 million with expected revenues at about $26.7 million, leaving the district with $960,973 in surplus.
