Mitchell Street pond a watery headache for Braidwood residents

A Mitchell Street homeowner said he’s had enough with the flooding on his property that all begins with a city-owned retention pond.

Troy Ehringer, who lives next to that pond near Mitchell and Round House, approached members of the Braidwood City Council on May 11, asking for some relief when it comes to the rising waters.

Saltzman exits Braidwood City Council

Amid a year of infighting that often plays out in public at meetings of the Braidwood City Council, one commissioner has now called it quits.

Finance Commissioner Wayne Saltzman resigned from his commission this week.

“I am resigning from the position of Finance Commissioner, it is time to move on,” Saltzman wrote in his letter of resignation, which was provided to the Braidwood Journal.

The battle over the budget continues to be tense for officials with the city of Braidwood, last week culminating in a prolonged argument between the city administrator and one commissioner which led a member of the public to scold the entire City Council.

Discussion on Novy Road safety returns to Braidwood council

Residents at Shadow Lakes say the lack of a railing along part of Novy Road is just an accident waiting to happen.

Shadow Lakes HOA president Wayne Kancler approached members of the Braidwood City Council during their regular meeting on May 4, looking to address the issue along the roadway that borders the private residential community.

Kancler said he read about the budget and the city finances in the Braidwood Journal on April 29, and was pleased to see it there is additional funding available for road work.

Mikel sworn in as Commissioner in Braidwood

The City Council in Braidwood is officially full once again.

James “Moose” Mikel was officially sworn in as Public Health and Safety Commissioner on May 11. Mikel was the winner of a special election held on April 6. Mikel won nearly 80% of the vote — a total of 595 votes — to secure the two-year unexpired term.

The seat was left vacant after former commissioner Charlie Hart passed away in November of last year.

Mikel was appointed as the acting commissioner prior to the election. He will fill the seat until the next municipal election in 2023.

Braidwood enters fiscal year in good financial shape

The city of Braidwood officially has a budget for the fiscal year that began this week.

On April 27, in a 3-2 vote, the members of the City Council passed the annual budget appropriation ordinance for the city for the 2022 fiscal year, with total projected spending across all funds at $7.9 million.

“All the patrolmen and sergeants and administration raises went through that, and everything was good,” City Administrator Tony Altiery said. “It’s balanced.”

PACE bus service returns to Braidwood

The PACE bus is back in business in Braidwood.

After pausing the service due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of Braidwood was able to restart the program with some modifications last month.

City Administrator Tony Altiery said the bus is for senior citizens, disabled residents, or caretakers of any senior citizen or disabled resident, free of charge.

“It takes them to a grocery store or to a doctor,” Altiery said.

Braidwood Clerk on the hunt for $50,000 overspent by previous city administration

Braidwood City Clerk Adam Beaty found out that sometimes, it pays to get dirty.

Beaty has been digging through dust-covered boxes and records hoping to track down as much as $50,000 in over-payments made by the city on past bills.

“I'm working in house to recover a lot of missing pennies,” Beaty told council members last week. “On April 1, the city was advised that it had overpaid for our workers comp insurance, so we will therefore see a refund close to $41,000 back to the city.”

Braidwood set to pass a balanced budget

The city of Braidwood is getting set to pass its annual budget ordinance.

During the April 13 regular meeting of the City Council, City Administrator Tony Altiery announced the new budget will be up for a vote at the next regular meeting on April 27.

More grant money to come for Braidwood

The City of Braidwood is hoping to capture enough cash from federal grants to help give a boost to local businesses that are still struggling due to the pandemic.

On April 13, City Administrator Tony Altiery told members of the City Council that plans are underway for grants through the American Rescue Plan and others.
