Braidwood opens the doors at Custer Park fire station

The fire station in Custer Park has officially reopened, operating with a full time staff for what officials say is the first time in its more than six decades of history.

On Monday, firefighters began their first day at the firehouse under an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between the Braidwood Fire Protection District (BFPD) and the Custer Fire Protection District (CFPD), which handed operations of ambulance and fire protection services in Custer Township to Braidwood.

As the Braidwood Fire Protection District officially takes over calls for service in Custer Township, the last days of the Custer Fire Protection District went up in smoke, as members of the fire service opted to burn bridges with Braidwood.

The boards of trustees for both Braidwood (BFPD) and Custer (CFPD) voted to approve an intergovernmental agreement on Sept. 26 to turn fire and ambulance service in Custer Township over to Braidwood, after months of back and forth between the two districts to hammer out the details of the agreement.

Staying calm, Braidwood 8-year-old saves his mother’s life

In most ways, Braxton Grayling is just your typical 8-year-old, spending the days hanging out with his friends at school, enjoying his favorite toys and activities, and concentrating on his favorite sport, motorcycle racing.

But on Dec. 30, 2021, Braxton was anything but a typical third grader. It was that day that the youngster’s actions weren’t just extraordinary, but also saved his mother’s life.

It was around 11 a.m. that Thursday during Christmas vacation when Braxton’s mom, Beth Grayling, suffered from a seizure and was unresponsive in their Braidwood home.

Braidwood Fire Protection District lauded for response

Members of the Braidwood Fire Protection District were recognized this month for their superior efforts in identifying a patient who had suffered from a possible stroke.

BFPD members David Tatroe, Rachel Mammosser, Ryan Schultz, Calvin Brainard, and Cody Cabada were lauded earlier this month by members of the AMITA St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for their quick response to a call recently, and their ability to get their patient the best care in the shortest amount of time.
