Wilmington 209-U confirms case of coronavirus in summer camp participant

An athlete participating in camp at Wilmington High School has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Wilmington 209-U Superintendent Dr. Matt Swick sent an email communication to parents this week, informing them of the positive test.

"We were informed [Monday] that one of the girls participating in the summer Volleyball and Cheerleading programs at WHS tested positive for COVID over the weekend," the message stated. "Her last day of participation in Volleyball was last Wednesday (August 5th) and her last day of participation with Cheer was last Monday (August 3rd). When she arrived at the school on Wednesday, she was NOT running a fever or experiencing any symptoms. After communicating with the student's parents and the Will County Health Department, we believe that she may have had contact with a couple of others who had tested positive at some point on Thursday or Friday. After experiencing some cold-like symptoms on Saturday morning (and being aware of her potential exposure), the student was tested over the weekend, with a positive result being received earlier today (Monday)."

Swick added that the Will County Health Department does not necessarily believe that there was any exposure to other students or staff during last week's practices, However, the health department is still recommending that anyone experiencing any symptoms or elevated temperatures report that immediately to their parent and coach.

All students and staff should be monitoring for temperatures and symptoms on a daily basis, and staying at home if there are any concerns at all.

"We are confident in continuing to move forward," Swick wrote. "You will be notified ASAP if there are any changes to upcoming practices or activities."

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), symptoms associated with COVID-19 include a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The first day of school for Wilmington 209-U is Aug. 26.
