Veteran’s Monument enhancement to be Eagle Scout project

Life Scout Christian Micetich of Troop 466 in Coal City outlined his proposal to add enhancements to the Community Veteran's Memorial located on the grounds of Coal City's historic school building at 305 E. Division. St.
Aspiring Eagle Scouts are required to undertake a community service project including planning, gaining the approval of stake holders, obtaining bids, and fundraising in order to qualify for the honor.
Micetich presented his proposal to St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars at its monthly meeting on June 3 and members endorsed the preliminary plan.
The memorial has existed in its present form since 1948, and has been refurbished twice, the last time in 2007 with the addition of granite surfacing and the adoption of a policy of placing the names of local veterans, whose names did not appear on the World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars bronze plaques, on the new granite surface.
Long-term plans include adding granite tablets to the south side of the memorial to accommodate additional names as they are approved and making the area surrounding the memorial maintenance free.
Micetich will be fundraising in the near future, and with community support, the memorial will continue to be the jewel of the community.
