Route 53 being resurfaced

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that daily lane closures will take place on Chicago Street (Route 53) from Manhattan Road to Doris Avenue, in Joliet and Elwood, for a resurfacing project, beginning, weather permitting, Wednesday, July 19.
In order to complete the work, daytime lane closures will take place in both directions at various locations along Chicago Street between Manhattan Road and Doris Avenue. At least one lane in each direction will remain open while construction activities are taking place.
The scope of project includes reconstruction and resurfacing of the roadway and shoulders.
Daytime lane closures will also take place on Chicago Street (Route 53) between Interstate 80 and Washington Street, in Joliet. The closures are necessary for a resurfacing and pedestrian improvement project along Chicago Street.
In order to complete the work, daytime lane closures will take place in both directions on Chicago Street between Interstate 80 and Washington Street. One lane will remain open in each direction while construction activities are taking place.
The scope of the project includes roadway resurfacing, pavement patching and sidewalk upgrades including new pedestrian signals. The overall improvements will enhance mobility, accessibility and safety along Chicago Street.
Both projects are expected to be completed in fall 2017.
Motorists can expect delays and should seek alternate routes through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
