Miners split with Morris

COAL CITY’S Logan Natyshok gets in front of the ball carrier in Sunday’s match up against the Morris Warriors. Morris got the victory 22-0. The Miners get a week off and will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they travel to Bradley.
The Coal City Miners youth football teams battled the heat and humidity on Sunday in a contest played at Morris.
Miner Superlights win
The Coal City Miners Superlights improved to 3-0 on Sunday, defeating Morris 39-6. Quarterbacks Drake Figge and TJ Wagner led the charge,rushing for two touchdowns and a single touchdown, respectively.
Austin Newman continued to add to his impressive season with two electrifying TDs and Preston Lissy stepped in at tightend to start the game off with an opening play touchdown.
Dylan Rich and Cole Watson helped contain Morris' outside rushing attack, while Brady Loughran, Kamden Kerr and Bradlee Severson anchored the defensive line.
The Miners travel to Bradley on Sept. 10 to take on the undefeated Lions in a battle for conference hierarchy.
Miner Lightweights fall
Even though the Lightweights lost 13-0, there were plenty of highlights for the team.
Camden Schott had some great ball carries, Zack Babcock did amazing with quarterback and multiple runs for added yards, John Viano had some good yardage.
There some great defensive line assists and multiple tackles, Ryan Carpenter had a good game flying to the tackles with a couple solo tackles, Bainen Durkee and Drake Heath with multiple assisted tackles.
JV wins 8-0
The JV Miners picked up their second win of the season, improving to 2-1.
The defense was led by Ryder Gill, Connor Rodriguez,Kaden Brown, Caiden Tourigny and Frank Roehr who were too much for the Warriors to handle. They stood their ground and got their first shutout of the year.
The offense, led by a Caiden Tourigny and MaddoxMeents, was able to punch one across the goal line. Luca Chellino's extra point kick gave the Miners the 8 points they needed to secure the JV team's 2nd win a of the year
Varsity Miners shutout
Varsity Miners lost 22-0 to a tough Morris Warriors team.
The Miners defense was led by Aiden Scrogham and Cooper Morris with 8 tackles apiece. Bobby Rodriguez came up with a nice interception and had a tackle for a loss. Emmet Easton created a fumble which was recovered by Brody D'Orazio.
On offense, Connor Henline connected with Ty Christopher for two receptions for 35 yards total.
The Miners are off this weekend and will travel to Bradley on Saturday, Sept. 10.
