Although dozens of changes have been made this school year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Wilmington music department will still be hosting its annual holiday concert to bring the joy of music to the community.

Instead of inviting community members to attend a traditional in-person concert, the band, Showcats, and choir are performing their music for a camera. So now moms and dads, aunts and uncles, grandparents and siblings will watch the concert from the comfort of their homes.

“It will still feed our souls in a way that music is able to,” commented Ms. Jessica Carey, the Wilmington choir and Showcats director. It may even be an opportunity to have a bigger audience than past years, considering anyone can watch it on the Internet.

The Wilmington AV club, under Mr. Will McGee’s supervision, will be recording the concert. The band, choir and Showcats will be recorded separately, then the tech team will put the videos together.

Once it is finished the video will be posted on the school’s YouTube page for the community to enjoy.

The high school’s concert was recorded Monday and the middle school’s performance will be recorded Dec. 14. The videos will be posted shortly after. Ms. Carey, is glad to be able to perform, even virtually.

“I consider us to be very fortunate because there are schools that don’t get to sing at all this year,” she said.

Ms. Carey and the entire music department hope their concert can bring a sense of normalcy and joy during these somber times.

“The one true goal in this COVID world is to continue to make music in whatever way we can,” Carey said.
