Congressional Commendation for Coal City vet

Irving DeWald has served his country and community for the past 60 years, and his dedication has not gone unnoticed.
Last week the Coal City resident was recognized by U.S. Congressman Adam Kinzinger with a Congressional Commendation recognizing his service to the nation’s military, its veterans and his community.
“At times, saying 'thank you' doesn't begin to cover the depths of our gratitude to those who answer the call to serve, but it's a good start and a small way to share our appreciation,” Kinzinger said.
DeWald  joined the U.S. Navy in 1957 and retired in 1976 as a chief petty officer. He was assigned to various campaigns such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam.
Today he is a key member of the St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars leadership team, serving as vice commander and senior alternate delegate to the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission.
In honor of his fellow veterans and  fallen heroes, DeWald volunteers  time to the honor guard at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Additionally, he is a registered member of American Legion Post 663 in Gardner and serves his community as a member of the village of Coal City Planning and Zoning Board. He previously served as a village trustee and park commissioner.
DeWald is an active member of the Coal City Lions Club, Sulpher Springs Arbor of the Gleaners and serves as a range safety officer for the Illinois State Rifle Association.
Kinzinger presented the commendations to 15 veterans during a ceremony at Ottawa City Hall on Thursday, Aug. 3. On hand for the presentation was DeWald’s wife, Elsie, who nominated him for the recognition. Also joining in were members of his family and fellow members of Post 1336 including commander Charles Brown, adjutant Keith Roseland, quartermaster Jim Richards, chaplain Rob Hibler and trustees John Dite and Bill Bomba.
State Senator Sue Rezin and State Representatives David Welter and Lindsay Parkhurst were among those in attendance to offer their congratulations and thanks  to the recipients that included Steven Huettemann, Alan D. Love, Robert T. Rogers and Eric W. Sampson, all of Morris.
“To the veterans of the 2017 Commendation Awards, thank you for your patriotism, courage, and unwavering service to this great nation. And, thank you for leading the way, and inspiring people like me to serve,” Kinzinger said.
