Wilmington water rates set to increase May 1

As May approaches, water bills for residents of Wilmington are set to increase.

By ordinance, the city of Wilmington increases water rates by 2% every year on May 1. City leaders discussed the impending increase during the April 11 Committee of the Whole meeting, hoping to get the word out to the public that the increase is coming.

The city approved the annual increase more than a decade ago, with that extra money utilized to pay for water, water treatment, and the wastewater treatment plant.

Braidwood water and sewer rates increased as of May 1

An effort by one member of the Braidwood City Council to freeze the annual water and sewer rate hike was defeated during the April 26 meeting of the City Council.

Streets and Alleys Commissioner Fay Smith had placed on the agenda a measure to waive the annual increase to water and sewer rates. By city code, rates automatically increase by 4% every year unless the council votes not to impose that increase.

Rate increases set for monthly water meter charge in Wilmington

The city of Wilmington has amended how it charges for new water meters. City officials said the plan is designed to make sure everyone is paying their fair share when it comes to those new meters.

On Oct. 20, the council approved an ordinance amending city code on meters and rates.

The ordinance amends the monthly fee for installation and replacement of meters, which will now be billed in accordance with the size of a customer’s meter.

The city of Wilmington’s utility rate increase looks to go forward as planned.

Water and sewer rates are set to increase automatically by 2% in June. On April 15, the city’s water, sewer, streets and alleys committee held a discussion on that planned increase.

Members of the committee recognized that there have been calls for addressing payments due to the city during a time when many people are not working or bringing in their usual pay due to the current stay-at-home orders.

However, city officials said decisions on water rates are more complex.

Water bills continue to be a hot topic among Braidwood residents who think their bills are a bit higher than acceptable. But despite those complaints filtering into City Hall, an increase in water rates has now been shot down by council members for a third year in a row.

On April 24, members of the City Council voted to cancel a planned 4 percent annual increase for water and sewer bills.

Municipal utility rates on the rise

     In order to align revenues and expenses associated with the operation of its municipal water and sewer department, the village of Coal City is adjusting its rate upwards.
    Beginning this month every drop of water consumed will cost a few cents more because town officials approved a 2 percent utility increase when they met last week.
    Each year the village reviews its rate structure and total expenses according to a formula that takes into consideration the various costs to operate the system.

Water bills still confusing some

It’s been three months since Braidwood residents first began to flood City Hall with complaints, arguing that their water bills had skyrocketed for no good reason.

In August, city leaders began fielding questions from homeowners, saying their water bills had doubled. But the city maintains that those bills are correct, and it’s not the total that has increased, but the frequency of the billing.

For the second year in a row, Braidwood residents will get a break when it comes to water and sewer increases.

But as far as some city officials are concerned, it’s not all good news.

On April 25, members of the Braidwood City Council split 3-2 on a vote regarding bills, narrowly approving a measure to halt water and sewer rate increases this year.
