The Wilmington Fire Protection District was called at 4:06 this morning for a structure fire at the Lakepoint Resort, 24801 Lake Point Rd located on the far west side of its district. Firefighters found a park model home with an attached screen room heavily involved with fire, extending to the exposed side of an adjacent mobile home. Wilmington, Braidwood and Coal City firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing it from traveling into the adjacent structure. Busy Memorial Day The Wilmington Fire District was busy with a smoke investigation on Memorial Day morningwhen they got a second call for a vehicle that overturned into the Kankakee River. A business in the area called 911 reporting their security cameras were showing smoke and sparks however an exact location or cause could not be determined. Wilmington Police, assisting the Fire District, received additional information and were able to determine the source as a small vacant building heavily involved by fire on the City property located at the West end of Stewart St. West of Kankakee St. Firefighters extinguished most of the fire in about 30 minutes, but worked another hour, assisted by Braidwood Fire personnel, pulling apart the building and extinguishing small spot fires. While still on scene of the fire, Wilmington Fire District was called for a vehicle rollover into the Kankakee River near the Water Treatment Plant on Widows Rd. Channahon and Elwood Fire Districts who were covering calls during the fire responded to the scene as well as Wilmington Fire units once they became available. The MABAS Division 15 Water Rescue Team was also requested to the scene. Fire District personnel discovered a vehicle with heavy damage down the embankment in the river on its roof.
