Wilmington Park District plans survey at Children’s Memorial Park

The members of the Wilmington Park District are making plans to get a survey completed at the park in Northcrest, as summertime maintenance and planning for upgrades at the site have led to some questions about where exactly the property line lies.

The board discussed the issue at their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, April 27.

The issue was brought to the attention of the commissioners out of worries of intruding on neighbors who back up to the park property while working on new installations at Children’s Memorial Park.

Jaylee Mills has definitely made a name for herself within the volleyball community over the past four years at WHS. She excelled on the court no matter what position.

Mills, daughter of Jenny Mills, recently signed to continue her athletic and academic career at Pacific Union College in Angwin, California.

Jaylee knew Pacific Union was her match. “I love the campus and I feel as though I would really fit in there,” she said.

Friday Night Lights to be updated in Wilmington

When the Wilmington Wildcat football team takes to the field in the fall of 2023, it will be under new and improved lighting conditions.

Earlier this month, the members of the Wilmington School District 209-U Board of Education approved a measure to put up new lighting at Jeff Reents Stadium.

For 32 years Wilmington police Sgt. Dan Brimer has kept a watchful eye on the community.

Brimer, who is about to retire, said he likes what he has seen over the years. Especially when it comes to sports at the youth and high school levels.

Wilmington plans for summer internship program

The City of Wilmington is planning a youth internship program for local high school and college students, in an effort to earn some work experience while learning about local government.

The Mayor’s Internship Program was created this year with the goal to provide workforce experience and give those interns a chance to build their resumes.

The program will be open to students who attend or have graduated from Wilmington High School, or who are currently enrolled at JJC.

Wilmington PD to install new radar units in patrol cars

The Wilmington Police Department will outfit their patrol cars with upgraded radar units this year.

The City Council discussed the purchase earlier this month during the Committee of the Whole meeting, and was expected to approve the purchase of the new units this week.

The department will purchase nine new units, one for each patrol vehicle in the fleet.

Police department officials said the purchase will bring the department up to date technology wise, and replace the aging radar units currently in use.

School Resource Officer headed to Wilmington Dist. 209-U

After nearly 20 years without a dedicated officer patrolling for the schools of Wilmington School District 209-U, a school resource officer (SRO) will finally return to campus for the next academic year.

The Wilmington City Council’s Committee of the Whole advanced a measure approving an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the city, the school district, and the Southern Will County Cooperative for Special Education (SOWIC) for final approval later this month.

Wilmington water rates set to increase May 1

As May approaches, water bills for residents of Wilmington are set to increase.

By ordinance, the city of Wilmington increases water rates by 2% every year on May 1. City leaders discussed the impending increase during the April 11 Committee of the Whole meeting, hoping to get the word out to the public that the increase is coming.

The city approved the annual increase more than a decade ago, with that extra money utilized to pay for water, water treatment, and the wastewater treatment plant.

Wilmington's leaf vac will stay in storage, for now

It’s been seven months since the Wilmington City Council last discussed the fate of the leaf vac program, essentially kicking the discussion down the road for a future budget cycle.

The issue was brought up for a brief discussion before the Committee of the Whole on April 11 to see the status of the program.

The result – the leaf vac looks to remain sacked for the foreseeable future.

Boil order issued as Widows Road gets new hydrants

Replacement of hydrants and maintenance to the city’s water distribution system were underway this week, with public works crews posting signs to neighbors’ doors along Widows Road that a boil order will be in effect through much of this week.

The city of Wilmington’s public works department began the work to remove three hydrants on the north side of Widows Road on Tuesday, April 11.
