CC golfers shooting ‘em straight so far

The Coal City golf team improved to 4-0 on Thursday with a 170-212 win over Wilmington on Thursday at High Point Golf Course in Essex.

Medalists for the event were Coalers Ryne Phelan and Dylan Brown who both carded a 41. They were followed by Ryland Magyeri and Jack Varnak who shot 44 on a rain-dampened course.

Wilmington Aaron Burkey led the hosts with a 45, followed by Shawn James with a 49.

Coal City 173, Peotone 178

On Wednesday at Cardinal Creek the Coalers won in a close shootout with the Blue Devils.

Morris spoils early run for Lady Coalers

The varsity Lady Coalers suffered their first blemish of the season on Thursday at home, losing to Morris 21-25 and 19-25. This brings their record to 2-1.

Addyson Waliczek had 12 setting assists, 3 digs, and 1 kill. Kayla Henline had 6 setting assists, 2 kills, and 2 service aces.

Jadyn Shaw had 10 digs while Addison Gagliardo had 5. Aubrey Mellen had 3 digs.

Kenzi Henline was impressive with 7 big kills while Gwen Wharrie had 3. Peyton Benson and Bella Veraveic both had 2 kills each.

The Coal City Miners youth football teams battled the heat and humidity on Sunday in a contest played at Morris.

Miners split levels with Bobcats to start season

The Coal City youth Miners football program split levels with the Bobcats as they won the superlight and lightweight levels while Wilmington captured the JV, and Varsity levels.
The Superlights began the day on a strong note, powering through Wilmington 40-20 behind a strong effort on the ground from Austin Newman.
Newman took the opening kickoff in for a touchdown to put them up a touchdown.
He wasn’t done there as he would score two more times on the ground en route to the victory.

Best Friday night pork sandwich contest is back

Be sure to go hungry to high school football games this fall because the Pork & Pigskins Championship is back.
The Illinois High School Association and the Illinois Pork Producers Association are partnering together to again award the best pork sandwiches served at football games.

Coaler golfers swinging for sectionals

The Coal City golf team is coming back off a fourth place conference finish and another successful season. They’ll be expecting a bit of the same this season.
The Coalers trailed Streator, Manteno and Peotone in the conference tournament with 379 team points, having Dylan Brown finish with a 93.
“We had two sophomores who qualified for the IHSA Sectional so that’s good,” said CCHS golf coach Harlan Kennell. “We’ll pretty much have five of our six top golfers coming back.”

Player, cheerleader numbers up for the Miners

Cheerleaders and players on the Coal City Miners will be suiting up Sunday for the home opener against Wilmington.
Coaches of the youth football teams are just as fired up with the number of players and cheerleaders who came out for this year. The Miners received the most signups they’ve ever had.

Illinois athletes who set the standard in fall sports

They are the best of the best when it comes to high school sports in Illinois. They’re the athletes who have had the most impact when it comes to playting fall sports.
Among the top football players in class 2A, was monster Jacardia Wright. Wright had tree trunk legs and he displayed it on the field at Decatur St. Teresa when he rushed for over 8,000 yards in his four seasons as a Bulldog. He also scored 150 touchdowns.

Baseball in Coal City continues to attract a lot of interest as the youth baseball camp just welcomed in over 70 campers this past week.
The numbers are good and the talent is great. It seems as if the future is bright for the Coal City baseball program. Coal City eighth grade baseball coach Greg Wills seems to agree.
