ICE recognizes best Comet matmen

Seven Reed-Custer matmen earned All-Conference honors in the Illinois Central Eight Conference.
The Comets, who finished with a 19-3 dual team record, had Seth Billingsley (120), Landon Markle (145), Brendon Tribe (160), Rex Pfeifer (170), John Alyward (195), Kody Marschner (220) and Gunnar Berg (285) all earn All-Conference honors. They also had Ryan Tribble (138) make it to state as he didn’t wrestle in the conference tournament.

The weather hasn’t cooperated with high school baseball and softball schedules as games since last Thursday have been either rained out or too cold to play.
Altogether, there has been 32 varsity contests canceled in the past week.
With rain in the forecast today and Thursday morning, there’s hope area teams will be back in action by Friday with an expected high of 50 degrees.

Lady Comets beat ‘Cats as time runs out

The Reed-Custer girls soccer team captured a 4-3 win over Wilmington on Monday thanks to a last-second goal to break the tie.
The Comets scored the first two goals and led 2-0 with seven seconds remaining in the half. That’s when the ‘Cats scored to narrow the deficit as they went into halftime trailing the Comets 2-1.
Wilmington overtook the lead as they scored another two goals to Reed-Custer’s one and they had that lead until the final 10 minutes of the game when the Comets would tie the game 3-3.

R-C boys run fifth in Comet Classic Invite, girls finish tied for seventh

The Reed-Custer track team placed high in their hosted Comet Classic on Saturday.
The boys scored the highest with 42 points. The leader was Westmont with 113 points while Coal City was in sixth with 31.
The boys performances
included:
Jace Christian-60m-7.57-PR-8th, 200m-25.47-4th, 4x200 relay-1:44.16-4th.
Rex Pfeifer-high jump-1.60-PR-2nd, 60m-7.67-PR-9th,
Danny Kuban-400m-59.90-PR-6th, 4x400-4:00.36-2nd.
Vander Dransfeldt-400m-
1:02.97-PR-14th, 4x400 relay-4:00.36-2nd.

When it comes to wrestling, champions are not born, they’re made young

With the Coal City Middle School wrestling team winning its second straight state championship, we asked how long will this last?
The answer looks like a long time, and don’t be surprised if Wilmington and Reed-Custer are close behind.
The Warriors won their first title in 2019 beating Taylor Ridge Rockridge before dominating Canton Ingersoll two weeks ago 316.50 to 99.

Comets are young but full of talent

The departure of several seniors may be felt this season for the Reed-Custer baseball team. But don’t overlook the young but athletic group that’s about to take the field.
Last season, the Comets finished third in the Illinois Central Eight conference with a record of 18-5, 10-4. Their season came to an end in a loss to Coal City during the regional championship.

Expect the Reed-Custer softball team to make some noise this season as they welcome a young group with a lot of experience.
“We took our licks last year,” said Reed-Custer softball coach Nick Arndt whose team finished 4-18, 1-18 a year ago. “We had only four upperclassmen. They were all freshmen and they were adjusting to the speed of the game. We had Grace Moyers and Halie LaGrange who were sophomores. We were young. We got better as the year progressed.”

Running Comets place seventh during indoor RC Invite

The Reed-Custer track team placed seventh as a team during their hosted Invite on Saturday.
Their guys scored 18 points beating outWilmington’s 10. Prairie Central (109) won the invite.
The boys performances included:
Connor Eggleston-60-8.25-14th, 60 hurdles-10.09-PR-4th, 4x200-1:47.62-3rd
Vander Dransfeldt-60-8.58-PR-17th.
Rex Pfeifer-200-25.66-PR-2nd, 4x200-1:47.62-3rd, high jump-1.52m-PR-8th.
Jeremy Eggleston-200-26.33-PR-9th, 4x200-1:47.62-3rd,
Vander Dransfeldt-1:04.50-PR-11th.

Lady Comet kickers have new coach, new plan

The Reed-Custer girls soccer team is back after a one-win season when they played only conference games.
They’ll try to better that with a new coach as Braidwood’s Aaron Vasil has stepped in for Kim Askew.
Vasil is currently an investment advisor for North South Capital in New Lenox but coaches Club soccer and coached these girls before when they were younger.
The Lady Comets finished 1-13 and were last in the conference, falling in their final game of the year in a 4-1 loss to Coal City.

ICE names best girls basketball players

Two Lady Comets have been named All Conference in the Illinois Central Eight now that the basketball season has come to an end.
For seventh place Reed-Custer (11-21, 4-10), Brooklyn Harding was named All-Conference while Mya Beard and Laci Newbrough were given special mention.
Harding was the do-it-all player for the Comets. She led them with 216 points (9th in ICE) and in assists as she was as unselfish as they come with 80 assists (3rd in ICE).
