Comet camp draws good numbers even with increase on cost of living

The Reed-Custer basketball program held its annual youth basketball camp last week, attracting future Comets eager to learn the game.
There were around 20 third, fourth and fifth graders, and 20 sixth, seventh and eighth graders who showed up so overall, a good crowd. Reed-Custer High School basketball coach Mark Porter says he’ll take it.

Wilkey earns some hardware during first season as a Cougar

Former Reed-Custer softball standout Kenna Wilkey was named an American Athletic Conference Second Team All-Conference softball player this spring for dominating on the mound with the Houston Cougars.
Wilkey said it was a good feeling to come back after a year off. It took a little bit for her to get going but once she did, she was rolling.

Pfeiffer set to compete for starting job at St. Ambrose

Reed-Custer linebacker Jacob Pfeiffer is ready to take football to the next level, signing a letter of intent to play football at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA.
Pfeiffer said he was looking at a few other schools but ultimately it was the coaching staff and the overall size that swayed him.

Comets, ‘Cats, Coalers to play in Braidwood Shootout

Reed-Custer will host its Braidwood Shootout for the first time in two years starting Tuesday when girls and boys basketball players will do battle against 31 other teams from around the state.
The Braidwood Shootout will start with the girls side of the bracket on Tuesday when Reed-Custer and Gardner-South Wilmington begin the tournament in the Reed-Custer Middle School gym at 8 a.m.

Christian soars in second year with Lewis Flyers

Former Reed-Custer track standout Jaden Christian has been rising with the Lewis University Flyers in her second official year on the track team.
Christian was performing at a very high level during her sophomore season as she stole first place from her teammate Aleccia Cardillo four times and won first place in both long, and triple jumps once.
That was in a big meet, earning both golds during the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.

Headrick knocking on the door for promotion

Former Reed-Custer baseball champion Brent Headrick has been more successful in May and June than he was in April pitching for the Cedar Rapids Kernels, a High-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
He continued his dominance on Saturday to start June when he would fan nine batters and walk one giving up two runs on four hits in a win over the Lansing Lugnuts.
Headrick has been on a roll leading into June but he’s really kicked it into gear in the past five starts when he compiled a 3-0 record and a 2.05 earned run average.

Girls basketball camp showcases middle school talent

The Reed-Custer High School girls basketball program held its youth camp on Monday and there were several who showed up eager to learn the game.
Camp continues through Friday for high school girls from 7-8:30 a.m., and for middle school girls from 8:30-10 a.m.
In Monday’s camp, the girls focused on defense but they will be working on different aspects of the game on different days.

Local high schoolers among top trap shooters in Illinois

Six local high school students shot their way to the top of the leader board in the USA Clay Target League.
Over 1,500 students are taking home awards this spring after participating in the USA Clay Target League that offers programs in 34 states.
A record-breading 31,688 student athletes participated in the USA Clay Target League spring season with athletes competing from 1,466 school- approved teams nationwide.

ICE names best kickers in conference

Nine area soccer players were named standouts in the Illinois Central Eight Conference as they were voted onto the ICE All-Conference team.
Reed-Custer (10-6, 4-3) made it all the way to the regional championship game, falling to Peotone in the title match. They still finished fifth in the ICE Conference, giving the All-Conference nod to Brooklyn Harding and Taylin Pippenger.

The baseball season in the Illinois Central Eight came to an end with Coal City being eliminated by Joliet Catholic Academy in the Sectional championship game on Saturday.
The Coalers, Comets and ‘Cats had many standouts, 10 of which were given the nod as All-Conference players.
