Coaler matmen pin to win battle against Comets

Coal City and Reed-Custer wrestling teams met on the stage of the Coal City High School Auditorium on Thursday to crown the Illinois Central Eight Conference champions. And in a landslide 57-9 victory over the Comets, the Coalers stayed a top the ICE for another year.
The match was closer than the score dictates as there were uncertainties leading up to who would win multiple weight classes. As he always does so well, Coal City coach Mark Masters put his guys in the best position to win.

Lady Comets trail early to Peotone, on a four game losing streak

The Reed-Custer girls basketball team was upended by Peotone 56-23 on Monday night.
The Comets fell behind as Peotone went on two big runs to lead 29-9 at half-time.
They tried to regain themselves and even scored 11 points in the third quarter but the Devils were always ahead of them, scoring 22 and five points in the final quarter to finish them off.
The Comets were led by Mya Beard, who scored six points while pulling down three boards. She also had a steal on the defensive end.

Comet matmen take both matches during an emotional senior night

The Reed-Custer matmen won two matches against Prairie Central and Ridgeview during a senior night dual meet on Monday that was unlike any other.

Comets crown two, place second in ICE tourney

The Reed-Custer matmen were down a couple of wrestlers but wrestled well with what they had as they placed second in the Illinois Central Eight Conference Tournament with 109.5 points.
Coal City led the pack with 204 points while Wilmington placed sixth with 34 points. Peotone (104), Lisle (92) and Manteno (46) rounded out the top five.
Kody Marschner (220) and Gunnar Berg (285) were crowned ICE champions.
Seth Billingsley (120), Landon Markle(145) and Brendon Tribe (160) were runner-ups.

Lady Comets get bounceback win over the Clifton Central Comets

The Reed-Custer girls basketball team edged Clifton Central 40-37 on Thursday to win the battle of the Comets.
The Lady Comets fell behind the Clifton Central early but narrowed their deficit to just four at the half, 21-17.
They went on an 11-6 run in the third to grab a 28-27 lead and outscored the Clifton Central Comets 12-10 in the final quarter.
Adrionna Williams was big for them as she scored 12 points, all of which came down low. She also had six boards

Garrelts will never forget the catch that changed his game plan

Reed-Custer senior Dylan Garrelts will always remember the catch he made during the Class 3A Quarterfinal football game against Byron.
He went up for a pass in the back of the end zone and caught the ball to give the Comets a 17-14 lead with the two-point conversion. But he there was no celebration as he ended up on his side clutching his leg in pain.
“I caught the ball, took like two or three steps and then my right leg planted and it just got stuck in the dirt. Then, I kind of went over the top of it.”

Marschner takes crown, Comets place second during weekend Classic

The Wrestling Comets blew through most of the competition during the Comet Classic as they placed second just behind Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School.
The Boilers won by 1.5 points as the Comets had 190 while the Boilers accumulated 191.5 points.
The Comets crowned one champion as Kody Marschner (220) again proved just how dominant he could be by pinning his way through the title match.
Gunnar Berg (285) and Ryan Tribble (138) came up just short of title in their respective classes settling for seconds.

Comets vs. Coalers will be closer than people think

It may be the biggest dual team match of the season on Thursday when Coal City hosts Reed-Custer in wrestling.
It certainly will be a big measuring stick for Reed-Custer when regionals come around. While Coal City has been the powerhouse, making it to dual team state five of the last six seasons, on paper Reed-Custer has a shot at upsetting the Coalers in a head-to-head dual.

Comets, ‘Cats matmen will face challenges at Comet Classic

If the pandemic stays out of the way, the Comet wrestling Classic Invite is back.
In 2020, the Reed-Custer Comets and the Wilmington Wildcats competed against a 17-team field.
The Comet Classic will take place Friday and Saturday in the Reed-Custer Fieldhouse after a year’s absence.
In 2020, Reed-Custer placed fourth while Wilmington was 15th in the 17-team event.

Comets fall short to Momence in OT

The Reed-Custer boys basketball team lost 67-65 in overtime Monday against a very good Momence team.
The Comets played rallied late but just couldn’t get the win.
Momence was 12-1 coming into the contest as they led 29-20 at the half.
After half, Momence went on a big, 25-10 run to take a 45-39 lead.
But the Comets fought back, tying the game in regulation but they were unable to pull it off despite outscoring Momence 26-22 in the fourth and overtime periods.
