Gina Wysocki is a thoroughly modern woman whose soul lies in yesteryear. She's a fossil hunter, historian, and author. She has written two books. The first book is the fruit of her years as a historian and is strictly non-fiction. The second is also non-fiction. Though the book is autobiographical in nature, it reads like a horror story.

Largest solar facility in Will County coming to Custer, Reed Townships

One of the largest solar energy sites in the county is coming to town. If approved by Will County, the nearly 3,600 acre industrial solar site will be built on 63 parcels ranging from 5 acres to 160 acres in Custer and Reed townships.

Mastodon Travel Center to break ground

Braidwood is growing by leaps and bounds. What was once the site of a small town restaurant will soon be transformed into a mastodon-sized travel center at Interstate 55 and Coal City Road.
And, that's not all. If the travel center is a success, there are tentative plans to construct a hotel just south of the travel center.

Orientation events will be held on Monday, Aug. 5 at Coal City Middle, Intermediate and Elementary Schools.

A push to quiet train horns in Coal City

Former mayor Neal Nelson believes the time is right for the Village of Coal City to push for the quieting of trains that rumble through the community.
There’s no denying Coal City residents are bombarded by train horns daily.
Coal City currently has seven crossings. Nelson points out that if the 60 trains (on average) a day initiate their horn three times for each crossing, Coal City residents could hear up to 1,200 horns a day. On average, train horns measure between 110-140 decibels which is the same level of a rock concert.

Fee Day Aug. 7 for all Wilmington students

Fee Day for returning Wilmington School District 209-U students who have not pre-registered or paid their school fees will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Parents are asked to report to their child's attendance center, beginning with the oldest child, to complete on-line registration.
Complete school physicals for students entering pre-school, early childhood, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades should be presented to the school nurse during these times.

R-C team departing for Bassmaster National with a plan

Reed-Custer fishing buddies Bret Cavanaugh and Alex Bielfeldt were taking things in stride Sunday despite being days away from competing on a national scale.
The two Casting Comets have qualified for the Bassmaster High School National Championship on Chickamauga Lake in Tennessee making them the first RCHS athletes to make it to a national event.

Still no sign of missing woman from Wilmington

Jennifer Tannhauser, aka Jennifer Murphy, 41, of Wilmington, disappeared 14 days ago without a trace. She left her dog, cell phone and medication behind.
“On July 10 at approximately 4:45 p.m., our agency received a report of a missing female from Fulton Street in Wilmington, who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, causing concern for her safety,” Wilmington police said.
Wilmington police, family, friends and volunteers searched the city of Wilmington and surrounding areas with no luck.

Preserving a town’s heritage comes with a $2.4 million cost

Village leaders took the first step that could someday turn a downtown building into the envy of Grundy County and even northern Illinois.
The Coal City Board of Trustees approved a $725,258 commitment towards a state grant that, if awarded, would allow for the purchase and rehabilitation of the old Bohemian Hall which has been a vacant storefront on South Broadway Street since Coal City Pharmacy closed four years ago.

Coal City gets power back

Thankfully, electricity is back on for most of Coal City as ComEd crews worked non-stop to repair a major power line that fell onto Interstate 55 around 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Homeowners north of Division Street got their power back shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday. By 1 p.m., 120 of 2,720 customers had their power back on.
