A look at one founding family of Braidwood
When looking at the history of the Braidwood area, one immediately finds that people were moving in and out of town on a regular basis. Names that pop up in the 1870s disappear 10 years later. This makes it difficult for historians to find out who were the movers and shakers of the early coalfields.

Wilmington Island, a real show place
The island in the Kankakee that gives Wilmington the nickname of the Island City has always been a place where folks went to be entertained. It was centrally located, had some nice flat pieces of land to set tents upon, and received the cool breezes from the river. Today we look at the various entertainments that set up there.

May 1865, the long road home
Although the streets were full of people it was strangely quiet. May blossoms filled the air, but black was everywhere you looked, over doors and windows, but mostly over the image of one thin bearded man. That was what a nation in mourning looked like.
