WILMINGTON-John G. Schmalz Sr., 69, of Wilmington, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at his residence.
Born June 11, 1944 in Joliet, John was the son of Earl and Margaret O'Connor-Schmalz. He was raised in Wilmington and was a 1962 graduate of Wilmington High School. John honorably served in the United States Army during Vietnam and he later retired from the steel mill, where he worked as a brick layer.
Survivors include his son, John (Glenda) Schmalz Jr. of Alabama; grandchildren: John T. Schmalz of Louisiana and Joshua (Erin) Schmalz of California; brother, Willie Schmalz of Louisiana; niece, Stacie Schmalz and his special friend, Geri Bosnak, both of Wilmington.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl Schmalz Jr.
Inurnment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. Family and friends who wish to attend the graveside honors are requested to assemble at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd. in Wilmington on Friday at 9 a.m. A procession will then depart at 9:30 a.m.
