5/13/2014 9:51:00 PM Northbound I-55 bridge at Arsenal closes for summer
It's been slow for weeks, but the summer slimdown of Interstate 55 over the Des Plaines River is official. On May 12, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) completed the official transition of the construction traffic pattern, detouring all traffic to cross the river on the southbound lanes. Work began this week on the northbound bridge.
It's a construction project that's now in year two of slow-downs and headaches for area travelers.
The work is necessary to complete structural repairs on the 57-year-old truss bridges, including steel repairs, painting, bridge deck patching and deck resurfacing on the northbound structure.
The lane reduction means that lanes are widdled down to 13 feet, 10 inches on each side, with several warning signs utilizing the Smart Traffic Monitoring (STM) System alerting drivers to back-ups.
