Brad Boresi and his fourth grade students are doing their part to support cancer awareness.
Students and several staff members at Coal City Intermediate School supported the annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser by purchasing T-shirts for the Friday, Feb. 1 event that is backed by each of the 12 conference schools and their boys basketball coaches.
The fundraiser features a conference basketball game where special T-shirts and raffle chances are sold to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Boresi said the event has raised over $10,000 in the past three years.
As the head coach for the Coalers, Boresi is a supporter of the event and made sure that each of the students in his class had a T-shirt to wear on game day.
The Coalers traveled to Seneca to take on the Fighting Irish. The players and coaches honored cancer survivors including Colleen Arias whose son, Segal, plays on the Coalers junior varsity squad.
Boresi said the fundraiser is a take on the college Coaches vs. Cancer event that features coaches wearing gym shoes rather than the traditional dress shoes for a game.
