Wrestlers compete at state
by Brent Sumner Reed-Custer ran into some stiff competition this past weekend, as they sent two individuals to the IHSA 1A Wrestling State finals in Champaign.
Bobby Mann (106) and Gabe Nagel (145) both made their first trip down to the state tournament, where they wound up falling in the opening rounds.
Mann faced Mt. Carmel's Chey Wood in the opening round, where he lost by a 6-1 decision.
Nagel opened up against Prairie Central's Simon Schuler, but lost by a tech. fall (15-0).
Both wrestlers were unable to advance to the wrestlebacks, as both of their opponents lost the following match.
Mann and Nagel will both have chances next year to repeat a trip to state, as Mann is a freshman and Nagel a junior.
While both wrestlers wound up not placing, they still end the season with winning records.
Mann finishes with a record of 36-9, while Nagel held a record of 30-17.
The Coalers wound up sending 11 wrestlers to the state tournament, where they had four earn spots on the medal stand.
Alex Friddle (113), Jake Hiles (120) and Brock Crawford (195) all earned third place finishes, while Daniel Jezik (145) picked up a sixth place.
The Wildcats sent eight wrestlers to the state tournament, and had two earn medals.
Wilmington's Robert Shields (145) picked up a fourth, and Nick Pretto (152) earned sixth.
