Unit 1 implements college, career exploration class

Students at Coal City High School have been provided a tool to assist them prepare for college and career, an instrument that will become mandatory for all incoming students.
Over the past three years, the school has provided students with access to Naviance, a software program that supports high schoolers through the college application process.
High school principal Chris Spencer explained that the program collects vital information from students including personal and interest inventories that assist in discovering potential career paths.
“From there they can do research on that career and discover what kind of education or training they need,” Spencer said.
In the coming school year, CCHS will begin a college and career readiness exploration class that will be mandatory for all freshmen and Naviance will be used in the class.
“It’s a great way for the students to get in some research and get ready,” Spencer said. The program provides a lot of valuable tools for students to use including a resume builder.
The Board of Education has approved a 36-month renewal of the program at cost of $10,500.
