South Broadway project moving along

Sidewalks have been poured, landscape bricks are being laid and street lights installed marking the final phase of the South Broadway reconstruction project.
Trustee Dave Spesia, who oversees the village of Coal City’s Streets and Alleys Committee, recently took a walk through the project area passing about a dozen residents who commented on the project.
“It was all very positive and I was glad to hear it,” Spesia said.
The trustee reports the project is continuing to move along and the new decorative lights that line South Broadway should all be operational soon. Lights on the east side of the street are complete while wiring of the west side poles is still being worked on.
Spesia further noted the landscapers are moving along on their work installing pavers.
“Things are proceeding and it would be nice if we could get the heck out of the way of the businesses before things start to open up,” Mayor Terry Halliday said.
The closing of non-essential businesses allowed workers to modify the construction schedule to limit the impact it would have on those businesses when they re-opened.
After walking the length of the project, Spesia put together a list of items that needs to be addressed, as did the village administrator. The lists were combined and sent to the contractor so the items could be addressed early, rather than at the end of the project.
“Hopefully this weather holds off and we can get this wrapped up,” Spesia said. Construction is slated to be completed in June.
