Patrick J. Sweeney

JOLIET—Patrick J. Sweeney, 82, of Joliet, formerly Chicago, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017 at Salem Village Nursing Home in Joliet.
Born Sept. 6, 1935 on Inishtrawar Island in County Galway, Ireland, Patrick Joseph was a son of Colman and Barbara (nee Coyne) Sweeney. He was raised in Ireland, and immigrated to Boston in 1957. Patrick then moved to Chicago in 1959, where he would live most his adult life.
On July 5, 1961, he married Patricia Ann Gallagher, whose family was also from Inishtrawar Island. Patrick “came all the way to America to marry the daughter of the girl next door.” Together they raised their family in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. Patrick was a laborer with Local Union #9 in Chicago where he helped to construct the caissons that support skyscrapers throughout Chicago. He will be remembered for his love of family and for being an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include his two children: Patrick J. (Susan) Sweeney II, of Wilmington and Kathleen (Carlton “Cully”) Vojtech, of Salem, WI; three grandchildren: Patrick J. Sweeney III, of Wilmington; Jessica (Brandon) Keymon, of Braidwood and Heather (Rodger) Crisp, of Salem, WIisconsin; five great-grandchildren: Collin and Reilly Crisp, and Hunter, Haylee and Halayna Keymon; one sister, Mary (the late Thomas) Lawlor, of Bolingbrook and numerous nieces and nephews.
Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Patricia and his four brothers: Michael, Colman, Thomas and Martin.
Per Patrick’s wishes, he has donated his body to science, and a memorial visitation will be at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd., in Wilmington on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 from 3 p.m. until the time of memorial service at 5 p.m.
