Leonard Abeln

WILMINGTON—Leonard Abeln, 79, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, March 13, 2020, at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather and loyal friend to many. His steady, cheerful presence at family and social gatherings will be missed.
He was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Breese, IL, the son of Leo J. Abeln and Lucille M. (Schulte) Abeln.
Enlisting right out of high school in 1959, Leonard received an honorable discharge as Electronics Technician 2nd Class with the U.S. Navy. Following his military service he attended college at DePaul University in Chicago. He had a long career in sales and marketing.
“Lenny" enjoyed spending time sharing his love of the outdoors with family and close friends. He had a great wealth of knowledge about fishing and hunting. Lenny made friends easily and many were considered family.
Leonard is survived by his son, Daniel Abeln; granddaughter, Emerson Abeln; stepdaughter, Connie Moring; stepson, Troy Timeon; brother, Philip Abeln; sisters, Helen Simon and Mary Frey and several nieces nephews, extended family and close friends.
Leonard was predeceased by his father, Leo Abeln; mother, Lucille Abeln and brother, Maurice Abeln.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to "his people" in the Wilmington community for the friendship they shared in his last years.
His wishes were to be cremated. In light of current events, a celebration of his life will be held at the Goose in Morris, as well as in Breese, IL in the hopeful near future.
