Graduation, promotion highlight end of year activities

Coal City High School’s senior class will graduate in just 11 days and as the final days tick down, building administrators and staff are preparing for the pomp and circumstance. On Thursday, May 12, the 150 members of the senior class will wrap up their academic studies, but the celebration will begin one day earlier with Honors Night. The event recognizes students who will receive various local scholarships and awards, as well as introducing the school’s Illinois State Scholars. The traditional “chicken in the shed” lunch is set for May 12; and following a senior breakfast on Friday morning, April 13; the class will run through the commencement ceremony that is set for Sunday, May 15 in the school’s competition gymnasium. The ceremony will include remarks from the valedictorian, salutatorian, and class officers, as well as Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg. Representatives from the Board of Education will be in attendance to recognize the graduates and award diplomas. The district will hold its promotion ceremony for members of the eighth grade class at Coal City Middle School on Friday, May 27. The ceremony will be held in the competition gym at the high school beginning at 7 p.m. A number of end of year activities are also planned to celebrate the eighth graders including a dance and class trip to Six Flags Great America . The final day of school for all students [with the exception of seniors and eighth graders] is Wednesday, June 1. It will be an early dismissal day with the Early Childhood Center letting out at 1:15 p.m., with the following building dismissal times elementary school, 1:35 p.m.; 1:25 p.m., intermediate school; 1:45 p.m., middle school, and high school at 1:35 p.m.
