While on leave in Chicago, Garland met the love of his life, Demaris Ann Morgan through mutual friends, and on Aug. 23, 1955 Garland and Ann were married.  During his time of service the couple would find themselves living in various places along the East Coast while starting a family. Upon retirement Garland and Ann moved to Phil Campbell, AL for 16 years until deciding to call Morris, IL home permanently in November, 2001.
Garland was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morris and volunteered as a policeman in both Frankfort and Phil Campbell. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening and tending to his yard.
